Sector 21 Model Road Upgrade Stalled, Commuters Face Potholes and Dust
Model Road in Sector 21 Stalled Amid Potholes and Dust

A key 2.5-kilometer road in Gurgaon's Sector 21, previously proposed for an upgrade into a model road, remains in a dilapidated state, compelling commuters to navigate potholes, broken surfaces, and dust pollution. The stretch runs from the Sector 21-22-Shalapur tri-junction to the Bijwasan border, also connecting the Sector 21 market to Old Gurgaon Road. Despite serving as a vital link to Delhi, several portions of the road are riddled with potholes.

Residents Express Frustration Over Delayed Redevelopment

Residents reported that the redevelopment proposal has been under planning for the last three years. Prakash Lamba, RWA president of Sector 21, stated, 'Multiple plans from a simple resurfacing to a model road were discussed over the past few years but never executed.' About six months ago, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) hired a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which was submitted three months ago, but the project has not moved forward.

Health Concerns and Lack of Maintenance

The delay is particularly concerning given the heavy traffic volume on the road. Poor maintenance and dust pollution have worsened the condition. Residents complained that loose soil and debris are rarely cleared, and there is hardly any sweeping. KL Sharma, RWA general secretary, said, 'It is a public health issue. At least three proposals have been floated for upgrading this stretch, each raising expectations but ultimately getting stalled. While the MLA is pressing for the redevelopment, it is yet to translate into visible action.'

MCG Official Provides Update on Revised Plans

An MCG official commented, 'This is being planned for redevelopment as a model road. It is a 24-metre-wide stretch, and we have already reviewed the initial design. However, some modifications were required, particularly the addition of a central verge and adjustments as per site requirements, so the proposal has been sent back to the consultant for revision. We expect the revised design to be submitted within the next week. Once it is finalised and approved, we will proceed with the tender. The aim is to develop it into a well-designed road with proper footpaths, a dedicated cycle track, and improved street lighting. We are also planning to include underground utility ducts to reduce repeated digging.'
