MP Power Discom Cracks Down on Power Theft with E-Auto Seizure in Jabalpur
In an unusual and stringent enforcement action, the MP Power Discom (Eastern) has seized half-a-dozen e-autos in Jabalpur over allegations of power theft. This incident marks a rare instance where a power utility has taken such direct measures, with officials describing it as a significant step to curb illegal electricity usage. The seized vehicles were later produced before a court, highlighting the legal ramifications of such violations.
Discovery of Illegal Charging Operation
A dedicated team from the discom conducted a raid and uncovered multiple e-rickshaws being charged from an illegal connection at a residential property in the Omti police station area of Jabalpur. This discovery exposed a covert operation that was siphoning off electricity without proper authorization, leading to substantial financial losses for the utility and potential safety hazards.
Financial Penalties and Legal Proceedings
Following the seizure, the discom imposed a hefty fine of Rs 25,000 on the owners of the e-autos involved in the power theft. Additionally, a bill amounting to Rs 6.66 lakh was raised to recover the estimated cost of the stolen electricity. The vehicles were subsequently presented before a court as evidence, underscoring the discom's commitment to pursuing legal action against such offenses. This move serves as a stern warning to others engaged in similar illicit activities.
The crackdown by MP Power Discom (Eastern) not only addresses immediate power theft but also sets a precedent for future enforcement efforts in the region. By taking these vehicles to court, the utility aims to deter further violations and promote lawful energy consumption practices among e-auto operators and the general public.
