In a significant enforcement drive, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has ramped up its efforts to combat power theft, targeting 11 districts in the Vidarbha region. Over the past year, from April 2025 to March 2026, the Nagpur regional division spearheaded this initiative, leading to the detection of a staggering 2,934 cases of power theft and irregularities.

Widespread Inspections Uncover Massive Financial Impact

These efforts revealed direct power theft instances valued at ₹34.05 crore, assessed under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003. Additionally, 1,092 cases of irregular electricity usage were identified under Section 126 and other provisions, involving an amount of ₹13.40 crore. The total financial impact of these detections amounts to ₹47.46 crore, highlighting the scale of the issue.

Recovery Efforts and Legal Actions Send Strong Message

MSEDCL has made substantial progress in recovering the assessed amounts, successfully reclaiming ₹43.14 crore from the total. However, authorities have taken a firm stance against non-compliance by registering criminal offences against 402 consumers who failed to pay the imposed penalties.
