Nagpur: Thousands of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) consumers have started receiving text messages informing them that their existing electricity meters will be replaced with smart meters within 48 hours.
Notification Details
The message states that consumers whose premises are yet to be equipped with smart meters will have their existing meters replaced by MSEDCL or its authorized representatives. It also serves as prior notice and requests consumers to cooperate with officials during the installation process. The notification has drawn attention because it specifies a replacement timeline of just 48 hours, signaling an accelerated rollout of the smart-meter project.
Free Installation and Benefits
According to MSEDCL, the replacement will be carried out free of cost. The utility says smart meters will eliminate manual meter readings, enable more accurate billing, and allow consumers to monitor electricity consumption and bills through a mobile application. The message further states that domestic consumers will be eligible for a rebate of 85 paise per unit for electricity consumed during designated solar hours.
Background and Opposition
The smart-meter project had earlier faced opposition in several parts of Maharashtra, with consumer groups and political parties raising concerns over its implementation and seeking greater transparency. Despite the resistance, MSEDCL has continued with the rollout and has now begun issuing advance notices to consumers ahead of large-scale meter replacement.
