Mumbai's public transport authorities have unveiled special all-night services to ensure a smooth and safe New Year's Eve for the city's revellers. In a coordinated effort, both the metro and bus networks will extend their operations well into the early hours of January 1, 2024.
Metro Line 3 Goes All Night
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has announced a significant extension for the Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line. Instead of shutting down at its usual time, the metro will provide continuous service through the night. The special operations will commence at 10:30 pm on December 31 and will run without a break until 5:55 am on January 1.
This initiative is designed to offer uninterrupted connectivity during the peak hours of celebration, allowing party-goers to commute back home safely without relying on private vehicles or expensive cabs. Regular metro service schedules will resume after the 5:55 am run on New Year's Day.
BEST Deploys Additional Buses on Key Routes
Complementing the metro's efforts, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking will bolster its fleet to manage the expected festive rush. 25 additional buses will be deployed across nine crucial routes in the city.
These special bus services will operate between 10:00 pm and 12:30 am, specifically catering to crowds heading to and from popular celebration hotspots. Key destinations covered include:
- Gateway of India
- Juhu Beach
- Gorai Beach
- Marve Beach
The identified routes for these additional buses are:
Regular Routes: 86, 203, 231
Air-Conditioned (AC) Routes: A-21, A-112, A-116, A-247, A-272, A-294
Heritage Tours and a Seamless Celebration
Adding a touch of charm to the night, BEST will also operate its popular heritage bus tours. These special tours will run from 5:30 pm on December 31 right through the early hours of New Year's Day, offering a unique way to experience the city's festivities.
The combined effort by MMRC and BEST underscores a proactive approach to urban mobility during high-demand periods. By providing reliable and extended public transport options, the authorities aim to reduce road congestion, discourage drunk driving, and ensure that Mumbaikars can ring in the new year with convenience and safety. This move is particularly welcomed by residents planning late-night celebrations across the city's iconic beaches and landmarks.
