Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link Project Enters Final Phase, Aims for April Completion

In a significant development for Maharashtra's infrastructure, the long-awaited "missing link" project on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway is now in its final stretch. Officials from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) have confirmed that the project is 99% complete and is expected to be fully operational by the end of April.

Project Overview and Key Features

The 13.3-kilometer bypass, connecting Khopoli and Kusgaon, is designed to alleviate chronic congestion on the steep and accident-prone Lonavala–Khandala ghat section. Once operational, this critical infrastructure is projected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by an impressive 25 to 30 minutes.

Anil Gaikwad, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of MSRDC, stated following a recent site review, "With 99 per cent of the project finished, we are now focused on the final touches. Work should be fully completed by April 25, well within our end-of-month deadline." He highlighted that construction efforts continued unabated during last year's monsoon season to ensure the project remained on schedule.

Engineering Marvels and Safety Protocols

The project is distinguished by several engineering feats, including twin tunnels and a massive cable-stayed bridge, both of which are structurally complete. Construction partner Afcons Infrastructure is currently laying the bitumen road surface on the bridge deck.

Before the stretch opens to the public, the bridge will undergo a crucial load-bearing test to verify its stability and safety under real-world conditions. Gaikwad emphasized, "The entire stretch will open to the public only after the necessary safety tests are successfully completed."

Remaining Tasks and Inauguration Details

According to project officials, only a few tasks remain to be completed. These include:

  • Installation of approximately 400 metres of crash barriers
  • Final painting and signage installation
  • Testing of the tunnel water-mist fire suppression systems
  • Reflective painting over a 3-kilometer stretch
  • Landscaping work

While the state government had previously suggested a May 1 inauguration to coincide with Maharashtra Day, MSRDC officials have indicated that the final opening date remains at the discretion of the state leadership.

Key Benefits and Impact

The missing link will allow motorists to bypass the narrow and hazardous ghat section, shortening the total travel distance by 6 kilometers. Beyond saving time for over 1.5 lakh daily commuters, the project is expected to deliver substantial environmental and economic benefits:

  1. Significant reduction in fuel consumption
  2. Lower vehicular emissions
  3. Enhanced safety for all road users

Project Specifications at a Glance

Highlight: The Cable-Stayed Bridge

The project includes a 650-metre-long cable-stayed bridge, which will be among the tallest road bridges of its kind in India. The structure features pylons rising to 182 metres, surpassing the 128-metre pylons of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Additionally, the project incorporates an 850-metre-long viaduct to ensure seamless connectivity.

This infrastructure milestone is poised to transform the Mumbai-Pune corridor, offering a faster, safer, and more efficient travel experience for millions of commuters and boosting regional economic growth.
