Delhi Government Unveils Major Infrastructure Overhaul for Munak Canal and Surrounding Areas

In a significant move aimed at urban rejuvenation and cultural preservation, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a comprehensive project to transform the Munak Canal. The initiative, which includes thorough cleaning, beautification, and the construction of dedicated ghats for Chhath Puja, is set to revitalize a long-neglected waterway in the national capital.

Foundation Stone Laid for Canal Rejuvenation Project

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta laid the foundation stone for the project on Thursday, marking the beginning of a much-needed overhaul for the Munak Canal. For years, the canal has been in a dilapidated state, often viewed as a symbol of dirt and disorder. The Delhi government's plan aims to turn it into a focal point of faith and culture, particularly for the upcoming Chhath Puja celebrations.

The canal will be equipped with dedicated ghats to accommodate devotees during the festival, ensuring a clean and safe environment for religious observances. This move is expected to benefit residents of several key areas, including Shalimar Bagh, Pitampura, Keshavpuram, Netaji Subhash Place, Punjabi Bagh, and Kohat Enclave. Once completed, the project is anticipated to attract over 30,000 visitors daily, boosting local engagement and community spirit.

Elevated Road Project to Decongest Northwest and Outer Delhi

In addition to the canal revamp, Chief Minister Gupta revealed plans for a major infrastructure development: an elevated road over the Munak Canal. This project, estimated to cost Rs 5000 crore, will stretch from Inderlok Metro station to UER–2. The primary goal is to decongest traffic in Northwest and Outer Delhi, providing a smoother and faster travel alternative for commuters heading towards Rohini and other outer regions.

"Once completed, commuters travelling towards Rohini and Outer Delhi will be able to avoid congested internal roads, ensuring smoother and faster travel," the CM stated. This initiative is poised to significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel times in one of Delhi's busiest corridors.

Additional Infrastructure Enhancements Announced

The project scope extends beyond the canal and elevated road. To further enhance public convenience and infrastructure, the Delhi government has outlined several additional measures:

  • A new road will be constructed alongside the canal, providing easier access for residents and visitors.
  • The Singalpur Bridge in Northwest Delhi will be widened to accommodate increased traffic flow.
  • A two-lane bridge near the Singalpur Bridge is also in the works, aimed at improving overall connectivity in the area.
  • Service roads on both sides of the canal will be re-developed, ensuring better maintenance and usability.

These combined efforts represent a holistic approach to urban development, addressing both cultural needs and transportation challenges. The Munak Canal project, once finalized, is expected to not only beautify the area but also serve as a testament to the government's commitment to enhancing public spaces and infrastructure in Delhi.
