Mysuru Tribal Hamlet Receives Electricity After Protests and Mercy Killing Plea
In a significant development, the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) has finally provided electricity connections to all households in Medaganane, a tribal hamlet located under the MM Hills Gram Panchayat in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district. This action comes after eight consecutive days of intense protest by residents and a desperate plea for mercy killing from a local woman, highlighting the severe lack of basic amenities in the area.
Protests and a Desperate Letter to the Chief Minister
The residents of Medaganane had been staging a determined protest for over a week, demanding access to electricity, a fundamental right that had eluded them for decades. The situation gained widespread attention last Tuesday when Kempamma, a resident of the hamlet, wrote an emotional letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, seeking mercy killing due to the absence of basic facilities.
"We have been living like wild animals without basic amenities. Even after 79 years of Independence, we have not seen electricity, and there are no proper roads. We move around in rocky terrain. Officials have been delaying the electricity connection. Either give us electricity or grant us mercy killing," Kempamma wrote in her poignant letter to the CM.
Longstanding Issues and Official Delays
According to local sources, the wiring and related infrastructure work in Medaganane was completed nearly a year ago. However, the process was stalled due to delays in obtaining necessary clearances from the forest department, leaving the hamlet in darkness despite the ready infrastructure.
During his visit to Male Mahadeshwara Hills in September 2023, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was specifically urged by the district administration to facilitate electricity connections to 31 hamlets in the region, including Medaganane. This intervention set the stage for eventual action, but implementation lagged until recent events forced a resolution.
Immediate Action Following CM's Intervention
Following direct intervention from the chief minister's office, electricity was finally supplied to the hamlet on Friday, bringing relief to the long-suffering residents. MM Hills panchayat development officer Kiran Kumar S S confirmed that approximately 31 families residing in the hamlet have now been provided with electricity connections, marking a critical step toward improving their quality of life.
Kempamma, while expressing her concerns, stated: "We don't have drinking water, and the roads are in poor condition. We protested for eight days. It is better to die than to live like this. Elephants trouble us, and even tigers and wolves come here. We informed everyone, but nothing happened. I wrote the letter hoping that if the chief minister intervenes, something would be done."
Broader Context and Future Challenges
This incident underscores the persistent challenges faced by tribal communities in accessing basic infrastructure, despite governmental schemes and promises. The successful provision of electricity to Medaganane is a positive outcome, but residents continue to grapple with other critical issues such as poor road conditions, lack of drinking water, and wildlife threats.
The resolution of this electricity crisis serves as a reminder of the importance of timely bureaucratic processes and the power of public protest in drawing attention to neglected communities. It also highlights the need for sustained efforts to address the comprehensive development needs of tribal hamlets across the region.
