Nagaland CM Officially Launches Digitisation of Vital Records in Kohima
In a significant move towards modernising administrative services, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially launched the digitisation of old manual birth and death certificates in his chamber in Kohima on Saturday. The ceremony, reported by Bhadra Gogoi, marks a pivotal step in the state's digital transformation journey.
Streamlining Service Delivery and Data Accuracy
During the launch event, Chief Minister Rio emphasised that this initiative will streamline service delivery and ensure efficient and accurate data management. He highlighted that digitising these vital records will improve citizen access to essential documents while assisting the government in making informed public policy decisions based on reliable statistics.
Transition to 100% Online Registration System
The Economics & Statistics Department, which made this digitisation possible, has announced that the issuance of manual certificates will soon be discontinued. The system is transitioning to 100% online registration and digitisation of old manual birth and death certificates. This move aims to:
- Streamline administrative processes
- Reduce paperwork significantly
- Provide citizens with faster and more reliable services
Background and Implementation Timeline
Following the directive of the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI), the department introduced online registration of births and deaths in Nagaland in April 2022. The current digitisation of old manual certificates has become essential to ensure that all historical records are seamlessly integrated into the new online system.
Chief Minister Rio commended the efforts of the Economics & Statistics Department in making this digitisation possible. He also urged citizens to ensure timely registration of births and deaths to maintain accurate vital statistics for the state.
Benefits of Digitisation for Citizens and Government
The digitisation initiative promises multiple benefits for both citizens and the government administration:
- Enhanced Accessibility: Citizens will have easier access to their vital records through online platforms
- Data Integrity: Digital records safeguard the authenticity of documents for future use
- Policy Making: Accurate data will support evidence-based public policy decisions
- Efficiency Gains: Reduced processing time and elimination of physical storage constraints
This comprehensive digitisation effort represents Nagaland's commitment to embracing digital governance solutions that benefit all stakeholders while preserving important historical records for generations to come.
