The Nagaland government conducted a comprehensive review of the state's preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio at the chief minister's residential complex in Kohima on Friday.
CM Emphasizes Proactive Approach
Rio underscored the importance of a coordinated and proactive approach among all departments to effectively address monsoon-related challenges. He stressed the need for timely intervention, seamless communication, and collective responsibility to safeguard lives and critical infrastructure. The chief minister directed all concerned departments to ensure that necessary machinery, equipment, and response systems are strategically positioned and maintained in full operational readiness to respond to any exigency. This reaffirms the government's commitment to ensuring public safety and minimizing disruptions during the monsoon season.
Monsoon Forecast and Risk Areas
The meeting discussed the monsoon forecast based on meteorological inputs presented by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, highlighting likely rainfall patterns and potential risk areas across the state. Departments including the Public Works Department (Roads and Bridges) and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited briefed on the preparedness of road infrastructure, covering ongoing maintenance works, identification of vulnerable stretches, and measures to address possible landslides and disruptions.
Emergency Response and Healthcare Readiness
Home guards, civil defense, and the State Disaster Response Force outlined their emergency operation plans, resource deployment, and response mechanisms to ensure prompt action during any eventuality. The Health and Family Welfare Department apprised the meeting on healthcare preparedness, including readiness of medical personnel, availability of essential medicines, and contingency measures for emergency situations.
Essential Supplies and Commodities
The Food and Civil Supplies Department, along with agriculture and allied departments, briefed on the availability, stocking, and distribution of essential commodities to ensure uninterrupted supply during the monsoon period.
Focus on National Highways
In view of the vulnerability of national highways, particularly NH-29 (Dimapur-Kohima) and NH-2 (Kohima-Mao), the meeting deliberated on measures to address landslides and road disruptions during the monsoon season. It also considered regulating the movement of heavy vehicles, especially those with more than 10-wheel configurations, to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow.
