Nagpur District Administration Kicks Off Census 2027 Preparations with Intensive Training Program

The district administration of Nagpur has accelerated preparations for the inaugural phase of the Census of India 2027, scheduling comprehensive training sessions for census officials from March 23 to March 25. This initiative signifies the commencement of field-level readiness for the upcoming houselisting operations, a critical step in the massive national enumeration exercise.

Structured Training Approach for Officials

Officials have confirmed that a group of master trainers completed their training in Pune on March 14 and 15, and have now returned to Nagpur to spearhead the local training sessions. The forthcoming training will specifically target charge officers and supervisory staff, who will subsequently mentor and guide enumerators before the door-to-door data collection begins.

The sessions will be conducted under the vigilant supervision of senior district officials, with both rural and urban teams receiving training concurrently. The curriculum will encompass operational protocols, digital data collection techniques, and effective coordination mechanisms to ensure a seamless process.

Organizational Framework for Rural and Urban Areas

For rural regions, the administration has established 43 charge offices to manage operations across 13 tehsils, 29 nagar panchayats, and the Nagpur Cantonment area. Each charge officer will be responsible for supervising 100 to 150 enumeration blocks, ensuring thorough coverage.

In the urban sectors, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has devised a plan involving 10 charge officers per zone, each supported by four sub-officers, along with approximately five head office officials. This structure brings the total number of officers to over 55 for the city. The district is projected to deploy more than 4,000 enumerators in rural areas, while the NMC will engage around 6,000 enumerators for urban coverage.

Each enumerator will be assigned a block consisting of 600 to 800 residents, with supervisors appointed to monitor small teams, enhancing accuracy and efficiency.

Two-Phase Census Schedule and Innovative Features

The census will be executed in two distinct phases. The first phase, involving houselisting and housing census, is scheduled to take place between April and September 2026. This will be followed by the population enumeration in February 2027. The initial phase will include a detailed 33-question survey focusing on housing conditions, amenities, and asset ownership.

In a groundbreaking move, citizens will have the option of self-enumeration through an online portal available from May 1 to May 15, 2026. Additionally, the government has introduced digital mascots named Pragati and Vikas to promote public awareness and encourage participation in the census exercise.

Critical Phase of Preparations Underway

With the training sessions set to commence, officials have emphasized that preparations have entered a pivotal phase ahead of the extensive enumeration exercise across Nagpur. This meticulous planning and training are essential to ensure the success and accuracy of the Census 2027, which plays a vital role in national planning and development.
