Nagpur Completes 90% River De-Clogging for Monsoon

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has achieved substantial progress in de-clogging the Nag, Pilli, and Porha rivers that run through the city. According to officials, approximately 90% of the work aimed at preventing urban flooding and improving stormwater flow has been completed.

Ambazari Lake Cleaning and Broader Monsoon Strategy

The civic body has also initiated cleaning operations at Ambazari Lake and is planning similar efforts at other major lakes across the city. This is part of a comprehensive monsoon preparedness strategy, as stated by NMC commissioner Vipin Itankar on Friday.

Itankar shared these updates with TOI after attending an online meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He emphasized that the civic administration is fully prepared to handle any emergency during the rainy season. The river de-clogging exercise is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed well before the May 31 deadline.

Chief Minister Reviews Multi-Agency Preparedness

Chief Minister Fadnavis reviewed the readiness of multiple agencies involved in monsoon response and disaster management. These include the army, navy, air force, coast guard, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), railways, communication department, and other emergency services, according to officials from the chief minister's office.

The NMC's proactive measures aim to mitigate the risk of urban flooding during the monsoon season, ensuring better stormwater drainage and reducing waterlogging in low-lying areas. The de-clogging of rivers and lakes is critical for maintaining the city's drainage capacity.
