Nagpur Mayor Demands Immediate Action on Stray Cattle Menace Following Serious Attack
In response to a severe stray bull attack that left a 64-year-old senior citizen critically injured one month ago, Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre has issued a stern directive to the civic administration. She called for immediate and uncompromising action to curb the growing problem of free-roaming cattle on city roads.
Emergency Review Meeting and Strict Directives
Chairing an emergency review meeting on Thursday, Mayor Thakre demanded a point-blank account of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's veterinary department's performance. She specifically ordered Dr. Gajendra Mahalle, the NMC veterinary officer, to launch a comprehensive census of stray bulls within city limits without delay.
"We need exact figures — how many animals are on the streets, which areas are most vulnerable, and how many citizens have suffered due to accidents or attacks," Thakre stated, making it clear that vague estimates would not be accepted.
Enforcement and Penalties for Cattle Owners
The mayor sought detailed information on how often irresponsible cattle owners have been penalized and whether the existing enforcement mechanisms serve as an effective deterrent. She directed the department to impose hefty fines on owners who allow their animals to roam freely.
Thakre emphasized that repeat violations must invite stricter penalties and possible legal action, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to the issue.
Infrastructure and Resource Allocation
Mayor Thakre instructed that all seized stray bulls be immediately transferred to the Nandgram cattle shed to remove them from busy roads and residential areas. She noted that construction of a centralized cattle shed is in its final stages, and once completed, this facility is expected to significantly reduce the stray cattle menace on city roads.
During the review, Thakre also assessed the availability of vehicles and manpower for capturing cattle and inquired whether additional resources were required to intensify operations.
Strategic Deployment and Coordination
The mayor further ordered the identification of accident-prone zones and the deployment of focused drives in those high-risk areas. She emphasized that coordination with traffic police, real-time monitoring, and sustained crackdown efforts are essential steps to prevent further tragedies.
In addition to addressing the stray bull issue, Thakre instructed the department to work proactively on resolving the city's stray dog problem, indicating a comprehensive approach to animal-related public safety concerns.
This decisive action comes as Nagpur faces increasing challenges with stray cattle, with the recent attack highlighting the urgent need for effective municipal intervention to protect citizens.
