Nagpur Municipal Corporation to Acquire Eight New Vehicles for Senior Officials
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is moving forward with a significant procurement plan to acquire eight new vehicles for its top office bearers, including the mayor and municipal commissioner. This initiative aims to upgrade the transportation fleet used by key officials, addressing long-standing needs and modernizing resources.

According to the proposal, which is set to be presented for approval soon, specific models have been selected for different officials. Mayor Neeta Thakre will receive an Innova Hycross, while the municipal commissioner will be provided with an Innova Hycross basic model. Additionally, six Mahindra Scorpio vehicles will be procured through a tender process for the following officials:

- Ruling Party Leader Narendra Borkar
- Leader of Opposition Sanjay Mahakalkar
- Standing Committee Chairperson
- Transport Committee Chairperson Mangala Khekre
- Chairperson of Weaker Sections Committee
The selection of these new vehicles was overseen by Narendra Borkar, ensuring alignment with the corporation's requirements and budget constraints.
Approval Process and Budgetary Considerations
The proposal must undergo a multi-step approval process before finalization. It will first require endorsement from the municipal commissioner and the standing committee. Following this, it will be presented to the general body for ultimate approval, ensuring transparency and compliance with municipal regulations.
Budget allocations have been specified for the purchases. The municipal commissioner's Innova car is sanctioned at Rs 15 lakh, while each Mahindra Scorpio for the deputy mayor and other committee chairpersons is estimated to cost Rs 12 lakh. This financial planning reflects efforts to stay within prescribed limits while meeting operational needs.
Background and Rationale for the New Purchases
This procurement comes after nearly eight years of the municipal commissioner using a vehicle originally purchased for former Smart City CEO Ramnath Sonawane. The inclusion of a new vehicle for the commissioner in this proposal highlights a shift towards dedicated resources for current officials.
Currently, NMC rents 25 vehicles for various committee chairpersons, a practice that may be streamlined with this new purchase plan. In selecting diesel-powered vehicles over electric options, the corporation cited cost concerns, as electric vehicles are more expensive and could exceed budget constraints.
