Nagpur Region to Receive 75 New Passenger Shelters with ₹15 Crore State Allocation
For countless daily commuters across the Nagpur region, the simple act of waiting for a bus has long been a battle against the elements. This persistent struggle, involving exposure to scorching sun and sudden monsoon downpours, is poised for significant relief. The Maharashtra state government has officially sanctioned a substantial ₹15 crore for a major infrastructure project: the construction of 75 modern passenger shelters across five key districts.
Strategic Distribution Across Five Districts
The ambitious plan targets bus stops that currently lack even basic facilities, focusing on the districts of Nagpur, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Wardha, and Bhandara. This initiative directly addresses a critical gap in public transport infrastructure, particularly in semi-urban and rural zones where passengers are most vulnerable to weather extremes.
Bhandara district leads the allocation, receiving the highest share with 22 shelters valued at approximately ₹4.4 crore. Wardha follows with 14 shelters costing around ₹2.8 crore. Nagpur division itself is set to benefit from 13 shelters, with an allocation of roughly ₹2.6 crore. Similarly, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts will each receive 13 shelters, with matching fund allocations of about ₹2.6 crore per district, as detailed in an official government notification dated April 2.
Standardized Design and Comprehensive Amenities
Each passenger shelter is projected to cost close to ₹20 lakh, with a detailed estimate pegging the figure at about ₹19.98 lakh. This comprehensive cost covers the entire construction lifecycle, including the civil structure, foundation work, essential electrification, applicable GST, and necessary contingency provisions.
The shelters are designed to follow a standardized blueprint to ensure uniform quality and durability across all locations. Key amenities will include:
- Covered roofing for protection from sun and rain
- Proper seating arrangements for waiting passengers
- Basic facilities to enhance commuter comfort
Addressing Long-Standing Commuter Concerns
For years, daily passengers, especially those reliant on state transport buses, have voiced concerns over the absence of proper waiting areas. The current scenario often forces commuters to seek makeshift shelter under trees, rely on the shade of nearby shops, or simply endure direct exposure to harsh weather conditions. This is particularly acute during summer heatwaves and the intense monsoon season.
Government officials emphasize that the project's core objective is to substantially improve commuter convenience and safety. The approval of funds marks the crucial first step, with the project now advancing into the phases of technical clearance and the tendering process.
