Nagpur RTO Campaign Targets Accident-Prone Roads to Save Lives

Nagpur RTO Launches Major Road Safety Initiative to Protect Vulnerable Road Users

The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Nagpur City has officially launched a comprehensive campaign titled 'Save Two-Wheeler Riders and Pedestrians' in response to escalating road fatalities across the urban landscape. This strategic initiative aims to identify and address critical accident hotspots through coordinated enforcement actions and targeted infrastructure improvements.

Alarming Statistics Prompt Urgent Action

The campaign launch follows disturbing data from Maharashtra state, where 2025 witnessed 36,450 reported road accidents resulting in 15,549 tragic deaths. A significant majority of these casualties involved vulnerable road users, particularly two-wheeler riders and pedestrians navigating city streets.

"The rising toll on our roads demands immediate and sustained intervention," stated officials from the Nagpur RTO, emphasizing the campaign's urgency. Under the leadership of RTO head Kiran Bidkar, authorities have conducted detailed analysis to pinpoint specific danger zones requiring priority attention.

Identifying High-Risk Corridors and Junctions

The RTO has identified three major road stretches that have recorded frequent motorcycle accidents:

  • The corridor from Wadi T-Point to Amravati Road
  • The stretch between New Katol Naka and Katol Road
  • The section from Sai Mandir Cutting to Jaripatka Ring Road

Simultaneously, three critical junctions have been flagged as particularly hazardous for pedestrians:

  1. Mankapur Chowk
  2. Khobragade Chowk on Jaripatka Ring Road
  3. Sangharsh Nagar Chowk

These locations have demonstrated consistently higher accident rates involving pedestrians attempting to cross busy intersections.

Multi-Pronged Enforcement and Infrastructure Strategy

Authorities have already intensified enforcement measures on identified roads, deploying radar-equipped vehicles to monitor compliance with traffic regulations. Special emphasis is being placed on penalizing helmetless riders, who represent a significant portion of two-wheeler accident fatalities.

Parallel infrastructure enhancements are being planned and implemented at vulnerable junctions to create safer pedestrian environments. These comprehensive improvements include:

  • Construction of proper footpaths along critical routes
  • Installation of protective railings to prevent unsafe road crossings
  • Clear marking of zebra crossings at designated pedestrian points
  • Planning for foot overbridges and subways at high-traffic locations
  • Upgraded traffic signal systems with pedestrian consideration

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Public Works Department, and National Highways Authority are collaborating closely with the RTO to execute these infrastructure projects efficiently.

Adopting Global Safety Standards

This campaign aligns with the internationally recognized Safe System Approach, which emphasizes integrated road safety through four key pillars: safer roads, safer vehicles, safer road users, and improved post-crash care. The initiative supports global targets to reduce road accident deaths by 50% by 2030.

"Our approach combines engineering solutions, stricter enforcement, and public awareness campaigns," explained RTO officials. "We believe this holistic strategy will create lasting improvements in Nagpur's road safety landscape."

Community Cooperation Essential for Success

The RTO has made a formal appeal to Nagpur's citizens and motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and cooperate with administration efforts. Public participation is considered crucial for the campaign's success and for achieving sustainable improvements in overall road safety.

"Every citizen has a role to play in making our roads safer," emphasized the RTO statement. "By following traffic rules, wearing helmets, using designated crossings, and respecting pedestrian rights, we can collectively prevent tragedies and save precious lives."
