Nagpur Municipal Corporation Initiates Pre-Monsoon Desilting Drive to Alleviate Flooding Issues
In a decisive move to address the persistent monsoon chaos that has plagued Nagpur for years, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has officially announced the commencement of its annual pre-monsoon desilting drive, set to begin on March 1. This initiative aims to tackle the severe waterlogging, flooded homes, and traffic paralysis that have become synonymous with the rainy season in the city.
High-Level Review Meeting Sets the Stage for Action
At a critical review meeting held at the Dr Punjabrao Deshmukh Standing Committee Hall, Mayor Neeta Thakre issued clear directives to officials, emphasizing the urgent need to clean the Nag River, Pora River, Pili River, and all major and minor drains across Nagpur before the onset of the monsoon. The meeting was attended by key figures including Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, Additional Commissioner Vasumana Pant, Chief Engineer Manoj Talewar, and various zonal officials, underscoring the high priority of this drive.
Officials provided detailed insights into the city's drainage infrastructure, revealing that Nagpur has 227 major drains and 152 minor drains. To support the desilting operations, 14 poclain machines have been deployed. However, despite similar assurances in previous years, many low-lying areas have continued to experience severe flooding, raising significant concerns about the effectiveness and monitoring of such initiatives.
Enhanced Accountability and Preventive Measures
In response to past failures, Mayor Thakre has mandated several strategic measures to ensure better outcomes this year. She directed officials to collaborate closely with local corporators and develop ward-wise action plans to prevent last-minute lapses. Additionally, she ordered the immediate completion of the tender process for hiring spider machines and the strengthening of chokage gangs in each zone to clear blockages in storm water lines.
During the meeting, frequent complaints about clogged storm water drains disrupting rainwater flow were highlighted. Thakre instructed officials to identify chronic waterlogging spots in advance and prepare a dedicated list to implement preventive measures before heavy showers occur.
Demands for Time-Bound Schedules and Public Outreach
Leader of the ruling party, Narendra (Balya) Borkar, emphasized the need for accountability, demanding a time-bound schedule for cleaning the Nag, Pili, and Pora rivers. He insisted that assistant commissioners be held responsible through written completion reports, stating, "There must be fixed responsibility to ensure the work is not merely on paper."
To enhance public safety and responsiveness, the mayor also directed the administration to publicize an emergency helpline number ahead of the monsoon. This initiative will enable citizens to report flooding or natural calamities and receive prompt assistance, fostering a more coordinated effort between the municipal corporation and the community.
As Nagpur gears up for the upcoming monsoon season, these comprehensive measures reflect a renewed commitment to mitigating the annual disruptions caused by flooding, with a focus on transparency, accountability, and proactive planning.
