Nagpur Police Implements AI Voice Technology to Revolutionize Complaint Registration

In a groundbreaking move to enhance police efficiency and public service, the Nagpur Police Department has successfully trained 165 women police personnel from Zone 4 stations in south and east Nagpur to utilize artificial intelligence and voice-to-text tools. This innovative initiative, specifically launched on International Women's Day, has dramatically accelerated the process of registering complaints and handling administrative tasks.

Launch and Leadership Behind the AI Initiative

The program was officially inaugurated by Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Rashmitha Rao, under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal. This cost-free, in-house AI-driven system represents a significant technological advancement for the police force. By integrating voice dictation capabilities through widely accessible platforms like WhatsApp and other free AI tools with existing computer infrastructure, the system has effectively addressed long-standing operational challenges.

One of the most persistent issues overcome was font compatibility within the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems), which had previously hindered digital efficiency. Joint Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy played a crucial role in motivating officers to embrace AI technology, emphasizing its potential to achieve substantially higher productivity levels across the department.

Transforming Complaint Registration Processes

The implementation of AI voice technology has fundamentally transformed how police handle routine administrative work. Officers can now simply dictate case details into WhatsApp, which then generates accurate digital entries for various reports. This includes non-cognizable offences, theft complaints, missing articles reports, arrest memorandums, and daily attendance logs—all completed within a remarkably short timeframe of just two to four minutes.

This represents a staggering reduction from the previous 30 to 60 minutes required for manual processing. The traditional method involved laborious typing that often resulted in long citizen queues, frequent typing errors, incomplete records, and diverted attention from essential policing duties. With the new system, complainants receive instant printed acknowledgments, significantly minimizing paperwork delays and allowing officers to refocus on preventive policing and investigative work.

Origins and Development of the Solution

The need for this technological intervention was identified by DCP Rashmitha Rao during routine performance reviews, where administrative delays emerged as a consistent concern. To address this, she assigned Police Inspector Kailash Deshmane from Nandanvan police station with developing a practical solution. Demonstrating remarkable resourcefulness, Deshmane created an effective AI voice workflow using readily available tools without requiring any additional budget, new software installations, or external technical support.

Expansion and Gender-Focused Training

Following a highly successful pilot implementation at Nandanvan police station, the AI system has been systematically extended to other Zone 4 stations. These include Sakkardara, Imamwada, Hudkeshwar, Ajni, and Beltarodi, creating a comprehensive network of AI-enabled police stations across the zone.

The International Women's Day training session was specifically designed to empower women police personnel, particularly those less comfortable with traditional keyboard interfaces. This focused approach has enabled female officers to handle CCTNS entries independently, thereby boosting both gender inclusivity within the force and professional confidence among women personnel.

Measurable Benefits and Future Plans

The adoption of AI technology has yielded multiple tangible benefits for the Nagpur Police Department:

  • Expedited complaint registration procedures
  • Substantially reduced waiting times for citizens
  • More balanced workload distribution among staff
  • Noticeable reduction in data entry errors
  • Enhanced overall station productivity
  • Strengthened public trust in police services

Encouraged by these positive outcomes, DCP Rao has announced plans to extend similar AI training to male police officers, promising even greater efficiency gains across Zone 4. "We are now planning for more intensive use of this technology. It is saving considerable time while also helping complainants receive their acknowledgment copies much faster," stated Rao, highlighting the dual benefits of improved internal operations and enhanced public service delivery.

This initiative stands as a model for how law enforcement agencies can leverage accessible technology to overcome administrative bottlenecks, improve gender representation, and ultimately deliver better services to the communities they protect.
