Nashik Railway Crossings Face Potential Temporary Closure During 2027 Kumbh Mela
In preparation for the massive Simhastha Kumbh Mela scheduled for July to September 2027, authorities in Nashik are considering temporary closures of several railway level crossings around the city. This move, while necessary for logistical and safety reasons, is expected to cause some inconvenience to daily commuters and local residents.
Ongoing Construction Work at Sixteen Critical Points
The Nashik Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority, in collaboration with Indian Railway authorities, the Public Works Department (PWD), and other key stakeholders, has identified sixteen level crossings (LCs) where construction activities are currently underway. A senior officer from the Bhusaval division of Central Railway provided detailed insights into the situation.
"There are a total of 16 LCs where work is going on," the officer stated. "At least seven of them are located between Nashik and Manmad, while the remaining nine are situated between Nashik and Igatpuri railway stations."
These locations feature various infrastructure projects, including:
- Road Over Bridges (ROB)
- Road Under Bridges (RUB)
- Limited-height subways
- Other related constructions
Despite these efforts, the officer confirmed that most of these projects are still under construction and are unlikely to be completed before the Kumbh Mela begins.
Challenges of Timing and Weather Conditions
The timing of the Kumbh Mela presents additional challenges. The event coincides with the monsoon season, which typically runs from July to September in the region. This period is characterized by heavy rainfall, which can further complicate transportation and infrastructure management.
"During July to September, it will be the rainy season," the officer explained. "Hence, we will have to make appropriate arrangements to ensure the locals are least inconvenienced due to closures."
Furthermore, the railway authorities anticipate a significant increase in train movement during the peak Kumbh period. "Since the movement of trains will be on the higher side during the peak time, we will need clear paths for their running," the officer added, highlighting the necessity for unobstructed railway operations.
Survey and Alternative Planning Underway
To mitigate potential disruptions, a joint survey is being conducted to assess the current situation and develop comprehensive alternative plans. The survey aims to identify the nearest accessible routes that locals can use during any temporary closures.
"During our survey, we will identify the nearest routes that locals can use and make necessary arrangements," the officer assured.
The railway authorities have provided a timeline for these preparations. The concerned survey is expected to be cleared by the end of February, with alternate plans projected to be ready by the middle of March. This proactive approach is designed to ensure that commuter movement remains as smooth as possible despite the anticipated closures.
The construction of these critical assets typically takes about three years. Given that the works have only recently commenced, completion before the 2027 Kumbh Mela appears unlikely, making these contingency measures essential for managing the expected large influx of devotees.
