The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has significantly expedited the construction of a crucial tunnel road beneath Palm Beach Road in the Sanpada Sector-19 area. This infrastructure development, centered around an underpass opposite the Moraj Circle, has become a focal point of contention due to its impact on the local tree population.
Tree Authority Approvals and Controversial Decisions
In June 2023, the state tree authority granted initial approval for the tree-related aspects of this project. However, the civic body's tree authority recently revisited and finalized the clearance, leading to a decisive plan: 329 trees will be transplanted to new locations, while 111 trees are slated to be axed to make way for the tunnel. This decision has not been altered, as civic chief Kailas Shinde has firmly declined to modify the subway plan, emphasizing the project's priority.
Construction Commences Amid Local Opposition
Work has officially begun at the site, specifically opposite the Kesar Solitaire building. The NMMC, through its appointed contractor, has initiated excavation using heavy machinery like excavators, and has installed notice boards and plastic net barricades to demarcate the construction zone. Despite these advancements, the project faces staunch resistance from local residents and environmental activists.
