New Ferries to Enhance Goa's Panaji-Betim Water Transport Route
In a significant development for Goa's transportation infrastructure, two newly constructed ferries are scheduled to be commissioned on the Panaji-Betim route this Friday at 4:30 PM. The commissioning ceremony will take place on the Betim side of the Mandovi river, marking a pivotal moment for the region's inland water transport system.
Successful Trials and Official Clearance
Currently stationed at the marine workshop in Betim, the ferries named Salaulim and Kushavati have undergone comprehensive trial runs earlier this week. According to Vikram Rajebhosale, the director of river navigation, these trials were deemed "fully satisfactory" by officials, leading to clearance from survey authorities for operational deployment.
Rajebhosale emphasized that the vessels are now fully prepared for service, with all necessary approvals in place to ensure safe and efficient operations on the busy waterway.
Enhanced Capacity and Speed for Improved Efficiency
Designed to optimize both passenger and vehicular traffic, each of the new ferries boasts impressive specifications:
- Passenger Capacity: Up to 150 passengers per ferry, a significant increase from the existing fleet's limit of 100 passengers.
- Vehicle Capacity: Capable of carrying nine cars, compared to the previous capacity of six cars per vessel.
- Speed: Operating at approximately nine knots, these ferries are slightly faster than the current fleet, which sails at seven knots, promising reduced travel times.
This upgrade is expected to enhance the overall efficiency of the ferry service, catering to the growing demand for reliable water transport in the area.
Vital Role in Goa's Transportation Network
The Panaji-Betim ferry route serves as a crucial inland water transport system, facilitating an estimated 11,000 passengers daily. It provides a vital alternative to the heavily congested Mandovi bridge corridor, which often experiences significant traffic bottlenecks.
With the introduction of these new ferries, the River Navigation Department (RND) anticipates a substantial reduction in road traffic pressure. This is particularly beneficial for commuters from key areas such as Calangute, Betim, and Porvorim, who rely on this route for daily travel.
Substantial Investment in Infrastructure
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore each, the two vessels represent a combined investment of approximately Rs 4 crore. This investment underscores the government's commitment to upgrading Goa's transportation infrastructure and improving connectivity across the region.
