New Ferries for Panaji-Betim Route to Undergo Final Trials in Goa
Two newly constructed ferry vessels designated for the crucial Panaji-Betim crossing in Goa are scheduled to undergo their final performance trials on Monday in the Mandovi River. This critical testing phase precedes the anticipated official launch of the ferries next week, marking a significant upgrade to the state's river transportation infrastructure.
Enhanced Capacity and Performance Specifications
The newly built ferries, named Salaulim and Kushavati, represent a substantial improvement over the traditional ferry boats currently operating in Goa. While existing vessels typically travel at seven knots with a capacity for six vehicles and approximately 100 passengers, these new models are designed to accommodate nine cars and around 150 passengers per trip.
In terms of speed, the ferries operate at nine knots, making them slightly faster than their predecessors. However, officials emphasize that the primary design focus has been on overall operational efficiency and enhanced passenger experience rather than achieving maximum speed.
Addressing Congestion on Goa's Busiest River Crossing
The introduction of these new vessels aims directly at alleviating persistent congestion issues on the Panaji-Betim route, which stands as the state's most heavily traversed river crossing. Current data indicates this critical transportation link handles an impressive daily footfall of approximately 11,000 passengers, creating substantial demand for improved ferry services.
River Navigation Director Vikram Rajebhosale provided detailed insights into the vessels' readiness, stating, "The ferry boats—Salaulim and Kushavati—have successfully cleared all preliminary inspections and checks, with the necessary certification processes currently underway. Monday's comprehensive trials will specifically evaluate performance across varying river depths and diverse operational conditions before the formal handover procedure."
Rajebhosale further clarified the operational philosophy behind the new ferries, noting, "The emphasis throughout the design and construction process has been firmly placed on improved vessel design and overall operational efficiency rather than pursuing sheer speed as the primary objective."
Substantial Investment and Service Expansion
The two new ferries represent a considerable infrastructure investment of roughly Rs 4 crore. Beyond serving the immediate Panaji-Betim route, these vessels are expected to significantly benefit vehicular traffic originating from key areas including Calangute, Betim, and Porvorim, thereby enhancing regional connectivity across multiple communities.
Regarding the official launch timeline, Rajebhosale confirmed, "Following the successful completion of these final trials and the subsequent formal induction process, the ferries are likely to be officially inaugurated and begin operational service next week." This development promises to deliver tangible improvements to daily commuters who rely on this essential river crossing for their transportation needs.
