NHAI Approves Major Safety Overhaul for Trichy-Chennai Highway

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sanctioned a substantial investment of ₹204.7 crore to eliminate four critical black spots on the busy Trichy–Chennai national highway that passes through the city. This significant infrastructure initiative aims to drastically reduce the high number of fatal accidents that have plagued these dangerous junctions for years.

Targeting Deadly Accident Hotspots

Out of eight identified accident hotspots, three specific junctions on the Trichy–Chennai NH—G Corner, Sanjeevi Nagar, and Kollidam Y Road—have been responsible for at least 46 tragic deaths since 2021 alone. The Maruthi Nagar junction, which falls under Trichy rural police jurisdiction, is among 84 other hazardous locations in the district that require attention.

Infrastructure deficiencies, particularly the absence of safe link roads for crossing the national highway at these four locations, have consistently led to severe accidents resulting in multiple fatalities. Two-wheeler riders have been especially vulnerable at these poorly designed intersections.

Comprehensive Safety Solutions

The approved plan includes distinct solutions for each problematic location. At G Corner junction, authorities will construct an elevated rotary complete with service roads, with ₹94 crore specifically allocated for this complex project. The remaining funds will finance light vehicular underpasses (VuPs) at the three other black spots along the highway corridor.

Trichy MP Durai Vaiko confirmed the financial breakdown, stating, "A total of 94 crore has been allocated for G Corner's elevated rotary. The remaining funds are for the VuPs." The planned underpasses will feature four-lane carriageways, similar in design to the recently completed structure near Thiruvalarcholai Road in Srirangam.

Addressing Technical Challenges

NHAI officials previously cited technical constraints in designing appropriate ramps near the Cauvery river at Sanjeevi Nagar junction. However, engineering assessments now confirm that a light vehicular underpass can be successfully designed and implemented at this challenging location without compromising structural integrity or safety standards.

At Maruthi Nagar, Kollidam Y Road, and Sanjeevi Nagar junctions, the new design will allow highway-bound vehicles heading toward Chennai and Madurai to utilize elevated roads, while Trichy-bound traffic will access dedicated service roads. The ascending and descending ramps for these structures are projected to span between 350 and 500 meters in length.

Minimal Land Acquisition Required

A significant advantage of this safety improvement project is that land acquisition will only be necessary for the G Corner junction development. The other three locations can proceed with construction without requiring additional property acquisition, potentially accelerating the implementation timeline once work begins.

Traffic Volume and Implementation Timeline

With approximately 25,000 vehicles passing through the Samayapuram toll plaza daily, the Trichy–Chennai national highway serves as a crucial artery for both inter-city and intra-city movement. Traffic between Ponmalai, Srirangam, Thiruvanaikoil, and Thiruverumbur heavily depends on this transportation corridor.

The decade-long demand for underpasses along this route has finally received official approval and funding. According to official sources, "The tender will be opened after the assembly election results. Construction will begin within two to three months after finalising a contractor."

Durai Vaiko expressed optimism about the project's impact, noting that road accidents on the Trichy–Chennai NH are expected to decrease significantly once the new safety infrastructure becomes operational. This comprehensive ₹204.7 crore investment represents a major step toward transforming one of Tamil Nadu's most dangerous highway segments into a safer transportation corridor for all users.
