NHAI Raises Alarm Over Safety and Maintenance Issues at Key Delhi-Gurgaon Toll Plaza

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a stern warning regarding significant maintenance failures at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) toll plaza located at the Sirhaul border on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. This critical entry point into the national capital, one of the busiest in the region, has been flagged for multiple deficiencies that pose serious risks to commuter safety and convenience.

Inspection Reveals Multiple Deficiencies and Safety Hazards

Following a recent inspection, NHAI documented numerous problems in a formal letter to the civic authorities. The inspection revealed irregular housekeeping practices within the toll plaza area, with visible accumulations of dust, dirt, and garbage creating unsanitary conditions. More alarmingly, the authority identified potholes and uneven road surfaces under the canopy structure, which could endanger vehicles as they slow down to pass through the toll booths.

Additional safety concerns include inadequate retro-reflective markings on toll plaza assets, significantly reducing visibility during nighttime operations. NHAI officials described the toll booths themselves as shabby and poorly maintained, further contributing to the overall deterioration of this crucial infrastructure.

MCD Response and Jurisdictional Responsibilities

Sumit Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of the Najafgarh Zone for MCD, stated that the civic body had not yet received the formal communication from NHAI regarding these concerns. "Once it is received, we will examine the observations in detail and verify the situation on the ground. Appropriate action will be taken accordingly," Kumar assured.

An NHAI official clarified the jurisdictional boundaries, noting that maintenance of the road surrounding the toll plaza falls under MCD's responsibility. "During our inspection, certain maintenance deficiencies were observed, and the matter was taken up with the civic body. We requested that the issues be addressed on priority," the official explained.

Commuters Face Daily Challenges at Critical Bottleneck

The Sirhaul border toll plaza serves as a vital connection between Delhi and Gurgaon, but it has become notorious as a bottleneck during peak traffic hours. Last month, reports emerged of commuters experiencing significant delays due to broken and uneven road patches near the toll collection area.

Praveen Yadav, President of the Gurgaon Udyog Association, highlighted the compounding problems: "Firstly, the traffic management at the toll plaza is not streamlined, and uneven and damaged surfaces further aggravate the problem. When vehicles pass, dust rises, which makes the situation worse. Thousands of vehicles cross this point daily, so basic maintenance and better coordination are essential."

Yadav emphasized the need for clear accountability among the multiple agencies involved: "There are multiple agencies involved, but the responsibility should be fixed. Authorities need to review pending issues, and ensure the problems are resolved in a time-bound manner."

Broader Implications for Infrastructure Management

The situation at the Sirhaul toll plaza underscores broader challenges in urban infrastructure maintenance and inter-agency coordination. As one of the primary gateways between Delhi and its rapidly growing satellite city, the proper functioning of this toll plaza affects:

  • Daily commuter safety and convenience
  • Regional economic activity and logistics
  • Public health through dust and pollution control
  • Overall efficiency of the Delhi-Gurgaon transportation corridor

NHAI has formally requested that MCD implement necessary corrective measures promptly to address all deficiencies identified during the inspection. The authority's intervention highlights the ongoing struggle to maintain critical infrastructure amid increasing traffic volumes and urban expansion pressures.
