NHAI Directs Banks for Immediate FASTag Verification to Strengthen Toll System
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a critical directive to all FASTag issuer banks, mandating an immediate and thorough verification of vehicle registration numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTag accounts. This decisive action aims to significantly enhance the accuracy and reliability of India's electronic toll collection system, addressing long-standing concerns over data inconsistencies.
Addressing Mismatches and Enforcement Challenges
In an official statement, the highway authority clarified that this move follows numerous complaints where the registration number captured by FASTag scanners failed to match the number displayed on the vehicle's actual license plate. NHAI emphasized that such discrepancies can severely undermine enforcement mechanisms, potentially lead to revenue losses, and may also result in penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The issue has been particularly prevalent with older FASTags issued prior to the integration with the VAHAN database. During that earlier period, verification processes were more manual and less stringent, which likely contributed to inconsistencies in vehicle data entry and storage.
Preparing for Advanced Tolling Technologies
NHAI stressed that accurate mapping of vehicle registration numbers with FASTags is absolutely crucial, especially with the impending rollout of advanced technologies like Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling. Under this sophisticated system, toll collection and enforcement activities, including the issuance of electronic notices to violators, will depend heavily on precise and flawless vehicle identification.
Verification Process and Consequences
As part of the directive, banks have been instructed to carry out urgent and comprehensive verification of all FASTags issued under their purview. Any FASTags discovered to be linked to incorrect or invalid registration numbers will be promptly blacklisted in strict accordance with established government guidelines, ensuring system integrity.
This proactive measure is expected to streamline toll operations, reduce fraud, and create a more robust infrastructure for future technological advancements in India's transportation network.
