Nagpur Municipal Corporation Implements Cost-Cutting Measures Amid West Asia Crisis
NMC Starts Cost-Cutting Drive Following State Directives

In the backdrop of the global crisis triggered by rising tensions in West Asia, the Centre and state government have adopted strict restrictions and austerity measures, prompting the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to begin a cost-cutting drive in line with 19 special directives issued by the state government.

Public Transport Mandate for Civic Staff

Deputy commissioner Nirbhay Jain said all departments have been instructed to strictly follow the government guidelines. As part of the measures, civic officials and employees will now have to use Metro, buses, or other public transport at least once a week, for which a fixed day will soon be decided. The directives also mandate reduction in vehicle convoys during official visits, while encouraging carpooling among officers and staff. Preference will also be given to electric vehicles hired from external agencies to reduce fuel consumption and promote environmental protection.

Impact Already Visible

The impact of the new policy has already started reflecting in inspection visits, where the number of vehicles accompanying officials has visibly reduced. The state government has also directed civic bodies to halt the appointment of consultants for small and large projects for the next six months. In recent years, NMC has spent crores on hiring consultants for various works.

Restrictions on Flex Banners and Lighting

NMC has further been asked to avoid the use of flex boards, banners, and decorative lighting except for essential communication purposes. Diesel generators for illuminated hoardings have also been prohibited.

Energy-Saving Measures in Offices

Strict energy-saving measures have also been introduced in municipal offices. Departments have been instructed to maximise the use of natural light during office hours, while air-conditioner temperatures must be maintained between 24-26 degrees Celsius. Officials and staff have also been directed to immediately switch off lights, fans, computers, lifts, and other electrical equipment after use.

NMC is expected to soon announce a dedicated "public transport day" for all civic employees.
