Noida's Botanical Garden Metro Barrier Collapses, Sparks Safety Concerns
In a concerning incident on Monday, an old and severely rusted height restriction barrier located outside the Botanical Garden metro station in Noida collapsed onto the road. The Noida Authority has since relocated the damaged structure, placing it parallel to the central verge on the same stretch. This event has reignited serious worries about commuter safety along one of the city's most critical arterial roads.
Critical Traffic Link Disrupted
This particular section of the Dadri-Surajpur-Chhalera (DSC) Road serves as a vital connector between Sector 37, Bhangel, GIP Mall, and sectors 16 and 18. It experiences an extremely dense and continuous flow of various vehicles throughout the day, including private cars, auto-rickshaws, bike taxis, and numerous delivery fleets. The sudden collapse of the barrier has not only caused immediate disruption but has also highlighted persistent infrastructure vulnerabilities.
History of Neglect and Temporary Fixes
The barrier was originally installed several years ago by the Noida Authority in coordination with local traffic police. Its primary purpose was to restrict the entry of heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks, forcing them to divert left through the metro station's parking area before rejoining the main road near the multilevel parking facility.
However, commuters and daily users of the route have reported that the structure has been in a visible state of disrepair for many months. Instead of undertaking a complete replacement, the Authority has repeatedly opted for superficial repairs. Gaurav Kumar, a regular commuter, stated, "The barrier had been deteriorating for a long time. It was rusted and broken at multiple joints. It has collapsed at least two to three times previously. Each time, workers carry out shoddy repairs and reinstall it. These fixes have consistently failed to address the underlying structural weakness."
Urgent Calls for Permanent Intervention
Echoing these frustrations, a bike taxi driver operating near the metro station emphasized the urgent need for a permanent solution. "If the Authority reinstalls that same rusted barrier again and it collapses onto a moving vehicle or a pedestrian, it could result in a very serious accident. It needs to be replaced with a new, secure structure immediately," he stressed.
In response to the incident, Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh has directed officials to inspect the site thoroughly and implement necessary corrective measures at the earliest possible opportunity.
Broader Pattern of Infrastructure Decay
This is not an isolated problem. A TOI report from June last year had already highlighted the dilapidated condition of both height barriers installed on DSC Road—one near Botanical Garden metro station and another close to GIP Mall. Furthermore, in March of the same year, a height barrier near the DLF Mall of India's west gate was damaged after reportedly being struck by a heavy vehicle.
Investigations reveal that most height barriers across Noida suffer from corroded frames and jagged, sharp metal edges, posing a significant threat to two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws. Compounding this danger is the frequent absence of reflective markings or adequate lighting, making these structures nearly invisible and highly hazardous during nighttime hours.
Demand for Systematic Maintenance
Residents and daily commuters are now vocally advocating for the establishment of a robust system for routine inspection and proactive maintenance of all public infrastructure, especially in high-traffic zones like DSC Road. They argue that such preventive measures are essential to avert recurring failures, ensure long-term commuter safety, and minimize public inconvenience.
The collapse of the Botanical Garden metro barrier serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglected civic upkeep. It underscores the pressing need for the Noida Authority to move beyond temporary patches and invest in durable, safe infrastructure solutions for the city's bustling roadways.
