Noida Authorities Shutter Eight Fitness Facilities Over Critical Safety Lapses
In a significant regulatory crackdown, district authorities in Noida have ordered the immediate suspension of operations at eight swimming pools and gyms. This decisive action follows comprehensive inspections that revealed these facilities were operating without meeting essential safety and regulatory standards mandated by local laws.
District-Wide Inspection Drive Uncovers Non-Compliance
Officials confirmed that formal notices have been issued to the operators of all eight establishments. These notices explicitly direct the operators to rectify all identified deficiencies and submit verifiable proof of compliance to the district sports department. The facilities will remain completely closed until a specially constituted technical inspection committee verifies that every prescribed standard has been satisfactorily met.
This enforcement is part of an ongoing, district-wide inspection campaign targeting fitness centres and aquatic facilities. A technical committee has been formed specifically to monitor adherence to safety protocols. To date, this committee has conducted inspections at a total of 30 gyms and swimming pools across Noida, indicating a sustained effort to enforce public safety.
Breakdown of Affected Facilities and Official Statement
District Sports Officer Dr. Parwez Ali provided a detailed breakdown of the facilities served with suspension orders. The list includes three swimming pools located within schools, one pool at a private club, and four gyms operating within residential housing societies.
"The notices were issued directing them to address deficiencies and submit proof of compliance before reopening," stated Dr. Ali. "Operations at these centres will remain suspended until the committee verifies that all prescribed standards have been met. This campaign is fundamentally about ensuring that public-use fitness and recreation spaces maintain basic safety infrastructure, proper documentation, and employ trained personnel."
Current Regulatory Framework and Compliance Statistics
Currently, the district sports department is issuing No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for swimming pools and gyms for the present financial year. Obtaining an NOC requires a registration fee of Rs 20,000. Official data reveals that so far, NOCs have been granted to 18 gyms and approximately 198 swimming pools. Notably, 148 of these certified pools are located within residential societies.
Stringent Mandatory Requirements for Operators
The inspection criteria are rigorous and multifaceted. For swimming pools, operators must possess and present:
- Valid safety certification and a detailed disaster management plan.
- Comprehensive CCTV coverage of the premises.
- Trained male and female lifeguards on duty.
- Fire safety clearance from competent authorities.
- Complete water treatment documentation and laboratory reports verifying safe pH levels.
- Emergency equipment including oxygen cylinders, stretchers, life jackets, and wheelchairs.
Additionally, pools must display contact details for the nearest hospital and police station, maintain meticulous visitor registers, ensure the use of non-slip deck tiles, and clearly mark water depths for user safety.
For gymnasiums, the mandatory requirements are equally strict:
- CCTV surveillance systems must be operational.
- Fire safety certification is non-negotiable.
- Separate, hygienic changing rooms for men and women are required.
- Employment of qualified, certified trainers.
- Maintenance of visitor registers and a formal emergency response plan.
- Availability of basic medical emergency equipment.
Operators are also obligated to submit ownership documents and a comprehensive list of all installed equipment. In a significant stipulation, officials have clarified that gyms are strictly prohibited from selling any medicines, dietary supplements, or protein products within their premises.
Commitment to Ongoing Vigilance and Future Action
District Sports Department officials have issued a clear warning, stating that periodic surprise inspections will continue unabated. Facilities found violating prescribed norms in subsequent inspections may face legal action, including potential fines or more severe penalties. This move underscores the administration's commitment to prioritizing citizen safety in recreational and fitness spaces across Noida.
