Noida's Ambitious Elevated Corridor Plan to Alleviate Expressway Congestion
In a significant move to address growing traffic concerns, the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and irrigation department teams conducted a thorough inspection of the Yamuna Pushta road on Tuesday. The inspection focused on assessing the feasibility and alignment of a proposed elevated corridor, a project designed to significantly ease pressure on the heavily used Noida Expressway.
Project Details and Strategic Importance
The proposed infrastructure is a 31.2-kilometer, six-lane elevated road planned to stretch from the Okhla Barrage near Sector 94 to the Yamuna Expressway near Gharbara village, which is opposite Gautam Buddha University. This corridor is being envisioned as a crucial alternative route, strategically running along the Yamuna embankment. It will link central Noida sectors and eventually merge with the Yamuna Expressway after crossing the Hindon River.
Officials emphasize the timing is critical, as traffic on the Noida Expressway is anticipated to surge dramatically with the operational launch of the Noida International Airport later this month. The corridor's route is planned to pass through Sectors 95, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 134, and 135—areas densely populated with offices, educational institutions, and residential complexes. To enhance accessibility, three loops are also proposed to connect adjoining sectors seamlessly.
Official Statements and Next Steps
Noida Authority CEO Krishna Karunesh confirmed the alignment inspection, stating, "The road will improve connectivity for commuters travelling from Noida towards Greater Noida and Jewar." Following this initial assessment, a three-member team from Almondz Global Infra, the consultant appointed by UPEIDA, will now undertake a comprehensive feasibility study. This study will evaluate technical viability, precise route alignment, and essential environmental considerations.
Once the consultant submits its report, the Authority is committed to drafting a detailed project report within a three-month timeframe. Construction is projected to take approximately two years, with the financial burden shared collaboratively by the Noida Authority, Greater Noida Authority, and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority.
Project History and Complementary Works
This project has seen previous iterations. Initially, it was considered for execution by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). However, that plan stalled as it required the Pushta road to be declared a national highway. The state government later decided to pivot, opting to construct an elevated embankment expressway on the stretch and entrust the project to UPEIDA for implementation.
In parallel to the long-term corridor plan, the Noida Authority is taking immediate steps to improve current traffic conditions. Officials announced that resurfacing work on damaged sections of the embankment road will likely commence in the coming weeks. Additionally, efforts will be made to plug missing links on the 45-meter-wide sector road that runs alongside the expressway. These measures are expected to provide interim relief and ease pressure on the main arterial corridor until the elevated project is complete.
