Odisha extends SCB fire probe panel tenure by 2 months

The Odisha state government has extended by two months the tenure of the judicial commission investigating the tragic fire at the trauma care ICU of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The incident, which occurred on March 16, claimed the lives of 12 patients. The commission, headed by retired district judge Laxmidhar Biswal, was initially constituted on March 16 with a two-month deadline to submit its findings. Its original tenure ended on May 15.

Extension Granted

A notification issued by the state home department stated, "It is felt necessary to extend the tenure of the commission till July 15." Government sources indicated that the extension was required to allow the panel sufficient time to conduct a comprehensive inquiry, including hearing a wide range of individuals connected to the tragedy. The commission had reportedly requested more time as it was not able to cover all aspects of the investigation within the initial timeframe.

Investigation Progress

The commission began its probe with a visit to the SCB hospital on April 13, during which Judge Biswal inspected the trauma care ICU. Officials stated that the panel had requested additional time to ensure a thorough examination of all relevant matters. The commission's mandate includes examining the sequence of events leading to the fire, the response of hospital staff, and other factors contributing to the tragedy.
