The Odisha government has directed the Puri district administration to prepare a comprehensive storm water management and drainage plan for the upcoming Rath Yatra, scheduled for July 16 during the peak monsoon season. The move aims to prevent rain-related emergencies and ensure a smooth experience for millions of devotees.
Focus on Drainage and Infrastructure
Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, Usha Padhee, emphasized the need for a foolproof drainage system along Grand Road to address waterlogging. The Puri Municipal Corporation has assured that all open drains on the festival route will be covered with concrete slabs by June 30. Padhee stated that civic infrastructure must be ready well before the festival, including timely road repairs, thorough cleaning of drains, enhanced sanitation, adequate lighting, and temporary parking facilities.
Basic Amenities for Devotees
Padhee stressed the importance of uninterrupted drinking water supply and round-the-clock public toilet facilities. Pilgrims should not struggle for basic amenities, and every arrangement must reflect respect for the devotees. Strict enforcement measures will be implemented to maintain civic discipline, with heavy penalties for dumping garbage or construction material on public roads.
Regular Reviews and Sanitation Drives
Puri Collector Dibyajyoti Parida has been asked to conduct weekly reviews of ongoing works. Sanitation drives are already being carried out twice daily, supported by awareness campaigns urging citizens to keep the city clean. Anti-encroachment operations have been intensified, and stray cattle are being relocated to gaushalas and temporary shelters.
Food Distribution Guidelines
In the interest of public health, only cooked food distribution will be permitted during Rath Yatra, subject to agencies submitting proper waste management plans.
