Odisha Government Reviews Heatwave Preparedness as Temperatures Climb

In response to steadily rising temperatures across Odisha, the state's housing and urban development department convened a high-level review meeting on Tuesday to assess and enhance its preparedness for potential heatwave conditions. The session, chaired by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, underscored the critical need for proactive and coordinated strategies to safeguard urban residents from the escalating heat.

Focus on Standard Operating Procedures and Water Supply

During the meeting, Director of Municipal Administration Arindam Dakua provided a comprehensive briefing on the agenda, presenting a detailed outline of the heatwave standard operating procedures (SOPs). These SOPs enumerate key action points that all urban local bodies are mandated to execute promptly. A significant portion of the discussion centered on ensuring equitable and uninterrupted water supply throughout the summer months, recognizing it as a vital component in mitigating heat-related risks.

Minister Mahapatra Emphasizes Vigilance and Coordination

Addressing senior officials via a virtual platform, Minister Mahapatra stressed the urgency of timely and well-coordinated interventions. He issued directives to all departmental heads, municipal commissioners, and executive officers of municipalities and Notified Area Councils (NACs) to strictly adhere to the prescribed SOPs. "No one should die of a sunstroke. All officials must remain alert, vigilant, and responsive at all levels," Mahapatra asserted, highlighting the government's commitment to preventing heat-related fatalities.
