A major tragedy was narrowly averted at Jhansi Medical College on Wednesday evening when a lift plunged from the first floor after its pulling wire snapped due to severe overloading. The incident occurred in ward number 8 of the main building, where visitors had gathered to see patients.
Overloaded Lift Causes Accident
At the time of the accident, approximately 16 people, including women and children, had entered the lift, which has a designated capacity of only eight persons. As the overloaded lift ascended and reached the first floor, the pulley wire gave way, causing the lift to crash down.
Immediate Rescue and Injuries
Upon hearing the loud noise, security personnel rushed to the scene and forcibly opened the lift door to evacuate the trapped occupants. One woman fainted, while a man sustained a fracture. Several others reported minor injuries. All injured individuals were promptly taken to the emergency department for medical treatment.
Official Statement
Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Sachin Mahour confirmed the details, stating, "Around 16 people got inside the lift, which has a capacity of eight. The liftman tried to stop them, but by that time, the lift had already started moving, leading to the accident." He added that the lift has been taken out of service for repairs, and authorities will ensure that proper alarm systems are installed to prevent future incidents.
The incident highlights the dangers of ignoring safety protocols and overloading lifts. Hospital administration has assured a thorough investigation and stricter enforcement of capacity limits.
