Patna Administration Intensifies Crackdown on Encroachments and Traffic Violations
In a significant enforcement effort, the Patna administration has collected over Rs 2.25 crore in fines from encroachers and traffic violators between April 2025 and February 16, 2026. This substantial amount was amassed during 212 days of rigorous anti-encroachment drives conducted across the city, highlighting a firm stance against unauthorized occupations that disrupt public order.
Seizures and Official Directives in Review Meeting
District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S M revealed at a review meeting on Thursday that the operations led to the seizure of 1,402 carts, stalls, and other temporary structures. He issued strict instructions to officials, emphasizing the removal of obstructions from public spaces and warning of disciplinary and departmental action if re-encroachment occurs. The DM directed authorities to identify habitual offenders and lodge FIRs against them to deter future violations.
Strict Policy and Urban Management Unit Implementation
The administration follows a stringent policy targeting unauthorized occupations that hinder traffic and public movement on key roads such as Nehru Path, JP Ganga Path, and Ashok Rajpath. To enforce this, an urban management unit has been established, comprising an additional district magistrate, three deputy superintendents of police, and three town magistrates, tasked with overseeing these operations and ensuring compliance.
Differentiated Action on Temporary and Permanent Encroachments
Officials were instructed to distinguish between temporary and permanent encroachments during the drives. Temporary structures are to be removed immediately to restore public access, while action against permanent ones must adhere to legal procedures within specified timelines. This approach aims to balance swift enforcement with due process, minimizing disruptions to daily life.
Enforcement of No-Parking and No-Vending Zones
Further directives included strict enforcement of no-parking and no-vending zones, with a focus on keeping footpaths accessible for pedestrians. The DM stressed that maintaining clear pathways is essential for public safety and mobility, reinforcing the administration's commitment to urban livability.
Infrastructure Support for Long-Term Solutions
To bolster these enforcement efforts, the administration plans to support them with infrastructure projects, including the construction of foot overbridges, underpasses, and road-widening works. These initiatives aim to address root causes of congestion and encroachment, providing sustainable solutions for Patna's urban challenges.
This comprehensive crackdown reflects Patna's proactive approach to urban management, combining immediate penalties with strategic planning to enhance public spaces and traffic flow for residents.
