Kanpur: As preparations for the upcoming Census 2027 gather pace in the district, several physically challenged persons have set an inspiring example by volunteering for duty despite being eligible for exemption.
While many government employees assigned census duties are reportedly seeking exemption on various grounds, three individuals—Vijay Bahadur, Jai Prakash Sharma, and Madhu Singh—have demonstrated exceptional commitment to national service, proving that physical limitations are no barrier to fulfilling responsibilities.
Vijay Bahadur: Leading by Example
Vijay Bahadur, an assistant teacher at Jawaharlal Nehru Inter College, Jamu, suffers from over 80 percent disability due to polio affecting one leg. Though eligible for exemption and having formally applied for it, he has expressed his willingness to serve as an enumerator in Zone-1. Having also contributed to the 2011 Census, he emphasized that the census is the foundation of national planning and called upon fellow employees to rise above excuses and actively participate in the exercise.
Jai Prakash Sharma: Determination Against All Odds
Similarly, Jai Prakash Sharma, an assistant teacher at Harjinder Nagar Inter College, has shown remarkable determination. Despite having an artificial leg, he has prioritized his census duties, underscoring that physical challenges should not hinder one’s commitment to duty.
Madhu Singh: Overcoming Hardship
Madhu Singh, a Shiksha Mitra posted at Primary School Sadikamau in Shivrajpur, also chose to perform her duties rather than seek exemption. Due to difficulty caused by a disability in her right leg, she requested assignment to a location closer to her residence. The district administration accepted her request and assigned her duty accordingly to ensure she could perform her responsibilities without undue hardship.
District Magistrate Commends Dedication
District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh lauded the dedication of such personnel, describing their commitment to a crucial national exercise as exemplary. He noted that at a time when many are seeking to avoid duty, these individuals have sent a strong message that challenges should not deter one from serving the nation. “While some look for excuses, others step forward to fulfill their responsibilities. Their spirit is truly inspiring,” he said.
