In a significant push to enhance urban cleanliness and flood preparedness, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has rolled out an intensive city-wide operation to desilt major drains. The civic body has set a firm deadline of January 31, 2025 for completing this critical task, which is a key part of its strategy for the upcoming Swachh Survekshan rankings and the monsoon season.
Special Teams Deployed for Oversight
To ensure the work is carried out efficiently and on schedule, PMC has constituted dedicated monitoring teams. Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena has emphasized that the timely completion of these desilting operations is a top priority for the administration. The cleaning activities will commence daily at 7 am across various locations.
The oversight teams comprise a mix of officials, including sanitary inspectors, city managers, engineers, and executive officers. Their primary role is to coordinate and supervise the desilting work at crucial points across the city.
Key Locations and Multi-Layer Management
The focus of the cleaning drive will be on several major canals and drains. Important sites identified for the operation include:
- Saidpur Canal
- Anandpuri Canal
- Kurji and Rajiv Nagar Drains
- Bakarganj and Bypass Drains
- Yogipur Drains
- The historic city moat drains
To tackle potential logistical hurdles, the corporation is implementing a robust, multi-layer management strategy. Field staff and engineers on the ground have been instructed to report any operational issues immediately to their respective zonal executive officers.
Escalation Protocol to Prevent Delays
The zonal officers, in collaboration with executive engineers, have been empowered to resolve problems locally to avoid any slowdown in work. However, for challenges that cannot be handled at the zonal level, a clear escalation protocol is in place. Such issues will be promptly reported to the municipal headquarters for swift intervention and resolution.
This structured approach aims to create a seamless workflow, ensuring that the desilting of Patna's drainage network is completed before the deadline. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the city's drainage capacity, reducing waterlogging risks during the 2025 monsoon and bolstering Patna's prospects in the Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 assessment.
