The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) recently conducted an interactive session with the Builders Welfare Association in Zirakpur to sensitise developers about environmental compliance and adherence to Environmental Clearance (EC) conditions during construction activities. The session was organised by the PPCB's regional office in Mohali and supervised by superintending environmental engineer Gursharan Dass Garg and executive engineer Kanwaldeep Kaur.
Focus on Simplifying Norms
Officials stated that the primary objective was to simplify environmental regulations and improve compliance rates in housing and construction projects across the region. Garg emphasised the necessity of strictly following EC conditions during both the construction and operational phases of projects. Builders were advised to prominently display environmental guidelines at construction sites to ensure on-ground enforcement and awareness among workers and supervisors.
Legal Consequences and Documentation
Officials cautioned builders about the legal repercussions of violating environmental norms. They urged developers to independently review and accurately fill application forms instead of relying on intermediaries. This practice, they noted, would streamline the approval process and reduce discrepancies in documentation.
Monsoon Preparedness and Water Management
With the monsoon season approaching, the PPCB directed builders to clean rainwater harvesting systems and ensure that only surface runoff enters recharge structures. This measure is critical to prevent groundwater contamination. The board also stressed the efficient functioning of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and encouraged the reuse of treated water for gardening and dual plumbing systems. Strict curbs on unauthorised discharge of effluent were reiterated as a non-negotiable requirement.
Eco-Friendly Practices
Builders were encouraged to adopt plantation drives and minimise solid waste generation through eco-friendly practices. The PPCB highlighted that such measures contribute to sustainable urban development and improve the overall environmental quality in rapidly expanding areas like Zirakpur.
Industry Cooperation and Future Plans
Harish Gupta, president of the Builders Welfare Association, assured full cooperation from the industry and flagged the need for additional STPs in Zirakpur to support the area's rapid urban expansion. PPCB chairperson Reena Gupta emphasised that sustained coordination between regulators and stakeholders is key to ensuring environmentally responsible urban growth.
The session underscored the PPCB's commitment to fostering transparency, awareness, and compliance among builders. By focusing on EC norms, monsoon readiness, STP efficiency, and proper documentation, the board aims to promote sustainable construction practices in the region.
