Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Calls for Urgent Road Upgrades in Odisha's Angul District
In a significant move to address infrastructure challenges, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has formally urged Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to take personal charge of strengthening coal transportation and industrial road networks in Angul district. This appeal comes amid escalating coal output and mounting strain on the region's existing roadways.
Proposed Infrastructure Enhancements
In a detailed letter dispatched on Thursday, Pradhan outlined specific proposals aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing safety. He advocated for the widening of the Chhendipada-Angul segment of State Highway-63 from its current two lanes to four lanes. Additionally, he recommended the construction of bypasses through densely populated zones to divert heavy vehicle traffic away from residential areas.
Further, the minister emphasized the need to expand the Chhendipada-Jarapada Road, which would facilitate smoother movement of mining-related heavy vehicles and provide an alternative route to reduce pressure on SH-63.
Angul's Economic and Strategic Significance
Pradhan underscored Angul's pivotal role in Odisha's economy, noting that this centrally located district, with a population of approximately 15 lakh, contributes nearly 5% to the state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). He highlighted that coal production in Angul is projected to surge dramatically from the current 116 million tonnes annually to between 250 and 300 million tonnes by 2033.
The district is home to several critical industrial and energy facilities, including the NALCO smelter plant, NTPC Kaniha, Talcher Super Thermal Power Station, and numerous coal mines operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. These installations position Angul as a vital hub for Odisha's energy security. Pradhan specifically pointed out that Chhendipada alone holds nearly one-sixth of India's coal reserves, reinforcing its national importance.
Current Infrastructure Challenges
The existing road infrastructure has become increasingly inadequate due to the rapid rise in coal transportation activities. Pradhan reported that SH-63 and the Chhendipada-Jarapada road are plagued by frequent traffic snarls and accidents, posing risks to both industrial operations and resident safety.

The proposed widening of SH-63 and construction of bypasses are expected to ensure smoother transit for coal-laden vehicles while significantly improving road safety for local communities. Upgrading the Chhendipada-Jarapada road would not only reduce the traffic burden on SH-63 but also create a reliable alternate route, enhancing overall connectivity and efficiency in the region.
