Prayagraj Enforces Mandatory Safety Devices for Commercial Vehicles
In a significant move to enhance commuter safety, the transport department in Prayagraj has issued a strict mandate requiring all commercial vehicles to be equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) and panic buttons. This regulation aims to bolster security measures across the district, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women, schoolchildren, and long-distance travelers.
Key Implementation Details and Deadlines
According to the new rule, effective from April, fitness certificates will not be issued to any commercial vehicle that lacks these essential safety features. This applies universally to all categories of commercial transport, including buses, trucks, taxis, and school vans. Officials emphasize that the enforcement will be rigorous, ensuring both new and older vehicles comply with the standards.
ARTO Rajeev Chaturvedi highlighted that while new commercial vehicles typically come with VLTD and panic buttons installed during manufacturing, the focus will be on retrofitting older vehicles. He stated, "Vehicle owners must get the safety devices installed through authorized agencies and link them to the department's portal to ensure proper monitoring and functionality."
Enhanced Safety and Emergency Response Mechanisms
The integration of VLTD and panic buttons is designed to provide real-time tracking and emergency alert capabilities. In case of an emergency, passengers can press the panic button to immediately notify the control room, while the tracking device enables authorities to locate the vehicle swiftly. This system is expected to significantly improve response times and overall road safety standards.
Officials warned that vehicles found without active devices after the deadline will be denied fitness certificates, underscoring the department's commitment to compliance. This proactive measure follows an RTO drive in July 2025, which revealed that many school vehicles lacked functional tracking and panic devices, highlighting the urgent need for such regulations.
Expansion of Fitness Inspections Beyond Prayagraj
In related developments, fitness inspections are now being extended to neighboring districts, including Mirzapur and Pratapgarh, indicating a broader regional push towards enhanced vehicle safety.
