Prayagraj Traffic Diverted as Old Rail Bridge Demolition Commences
In Prayagraj, the dismantling of the old key rail overbridge (ROB) connecting GT Road with Khusrobagh and Lukerganj has officially begun, prompting significant traffic adjustments. With all vehicle movement on the old ROB now completely halted, traffic police have taken proactive measures to streamline operations on the adjacent Lukerganj ROB, ensuring minimal disruption for commuters.
Enhanced Traffic Management on Lukerganj ROB
To manage the increased traffic volume, DCP (traffic) Neeraj Pandey announced the deployment of extra traffic policemen and home guards on the Lukerganj ROB. This strategic move aims to facilitate smooth traffic flow, particularly as a large number of two-wheelers and four-wheelers rely on this route for daily commutes between the old city, Civil Lines, and the High Court area. Pandey emphasized that the additional personnel are crucial for maintaining order and preventing congestion during this transitional period.
Demolition and Construction Timeline
The demolition of the 850-metre-long old ROB, which had become structurally weak over the years, is expected to be completed within the next two months. Authorities have initiated the replacement process for this ageing structure on the busy Howrah–Delhi rail route. Construction of the new ROB is scheduled to begin next month, with a targeted completion date set for May 2028. Once finished, the new bridge is anticipated to significantly enhance traffic flow and safety along this critical corridor.
Historical Context and Safety Concerns
Originally built by the public works department in 1962 and later transferred to the bridge corporation in 1969, the old ROB had been in deteriorating condition for several years. Due to safety concerns, heavy vehicles were banned from using it earlier, and only two-wheelers were permitted until April 10. The Lukerganj ROB, constructed adjacent to the old structure, is now bearing the entire traffic burden between the old city and Civil Lines, highlighting the urgency of the replacement project.
Officials are optimistic that the new ROB will address long-standing issues, providing a safer and more efficient route for all vehicles. This development marks a significant step in Prayagraj's infrastructure upgrades, aimed at improving urban mobility and reducing commute times for residents.
