Pune Civic Chief Takes Strict Action Against Officials Over Encroachment Failures

In a decisive move against administrative lapses, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi has suspended two engineers and issued a formal show-cause notice to an assistant municipal commissioner for their failure to address encroachments within their respective jurisdictions. The disciplinary actions, all ordered on April 10, highlight the civic body's intensified crackdown on illegal structures ahead of the monsoon season.

Suspensions Issued for Leak and Inaction

Junior Engineer Sandip Hazare of the H Ward faced suspension for allegedly leaking confidential information regarding a planned anti-encroachment drive. Officials revealed that the operation, scheduled for April 1, was meticulously prepared with staff, vehicles, and machinery in place. However, on the ground, authorities encountered significant resistance from local residents and alleged pressure from influential figures.

"It later emerged that Hazare had shared details of the drive a day in advance, leading to a gathering at the site that disrupted the operation," civic officials stated, underscoring the breach of protocol that compromised the entire initiative.

In a separate case, Assistant Civil Engineer Sheshrao Atkore from the D Ward was suspended for sheer inaction. Despite receiving multiple complaints about encroachments, Atkore neither conducted necessary surveys nor initiated any steps to remove the illegal structures, prompting swift disciplinary measures from the municipal commissioner.

Show-Cause Notice for Poor Performance

Commissioner Suryawanshi also issued a show-cause notice to Tanaji Narale, the assistant municipal commissioner overseeing the E Ward, for inadequate action against unauthorized constructions. The notice pointed out a stark disparity: while 572 notices had been served to illegal structures in the ward, action was taken in only 82 cases, indicating a significant enforcement gap.

Responding to the notice, Narale clarified on Sunday that approximately 20 temporary and permanent structures located in flood lines and red zones had been demolished over the past 11 days. However, this response did not fully address the commissioner's concerns regarding the overall pace and effectiveness of encroachment removal efforts.

Pre-Monsoon Preparedness Drive

The actions coincide with a review meeting on pre-monsoon preparedness held on Sunday, where Commissioner Suryawanshi directed officials to accelerate efforts against illegal structures obstructing natural drainage channels. "Unauthorized constructions obstruct the flow of drainage channels and worsen the waterlogging problem in the city. Therefore, no leniency should be shown towards such structures," he emphasized, linking encroachment removal directly to flood mitigation and urban safety.

This crackdown reflects a broader administrative push to ensure compliance and accountability among civic officials, particularly as Pune braces for the monsoon. The suspensions and notice serve as a stern warning to other departments to prioritize anti-encroachment drives and maintain operational secrecy to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
