The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is implementing a series of precautionary safety upgrades for the under-construction Rakshak Chowk flyover near Pimple Nilakh in Pune. This action follows a comprehensive safety audit that highlighted significant concerns regarding the flyover's steep gradient, raising urgent questions about motorist safety prior to its official inauguration.
Safety Audit Triggers Design Review and Precautionary Measures
The safety audit was initiated after a detailed site inspection conducted by Maval MP Shrirang Barne, who explicitly flagged the sharp slope as a potential accident risk. Barne drew a direct comparison to the Madhukar Pavale flyover in Nigdi, urging authorities to reconsider the current design and explore the possibility of extending the flyover to mitigate the gradient issue.
In response to these findings, civic officials have outlined a multi-faceted plan to enhance safety. Proposed measures include enforcing a strict 30 kmph speed limit, installing prominent rumble strips, and deploying enhanced signage systems. These signs are designed to alert commuters well in advance about the approaching steep section, allowing for adequate preparation and reduced speed.
Potential Two-Wheeler Restriction and Project Details
Authorities are also actively evaluating whether to restrict two-wheelers from using the flyover as an additional precautionary step. However, officials have clarified that a final decision on this specific proposal has not yet been made and remains under consideration alongside other safety protocols.
Despite the gradient concerns, officials maintain that the audit did not uncover any structural flaws or major design defects. They assert that the gradient complies with the established norms set by the Indian Road Congress and that no significant design alterations have been formally recommended. The Rs 22-crore project, which is over 95% complete, was designed by experts from the College of Engineering, Pune (COEP) and has been vetted according to mandated engineering standards.

The Rakshak Chowk flyover is a strategically important infrastructure project located on the Aundh-BRTS road. It serves as a critical connector for key routes leading towards Pune, Ravet, and the Mumbai highway.
