Pune MLA Calls for Comprehensive Transport Strategy Ahead of Major Infrastructure Projects
Shirur assembly constituency MLA Dnyaneshwar Katke has issued a strong appeal to the Metro authorities, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and the traffic police. He is urging them to develop a detailed transportation plan and establish alternative road links in key areas before the commencement of major construction work.
Focus on Wagholi, Kharadi, and Ahilyanagar Highway
The specific areas of concern highlighted by Katke include Wagholi, Kharadi, and the stretch along the Ahilyanagar highway. The MLA emphasized that proactive planning is essential to prevent significant inconvenience to the daily commuters who rely on Nagar road. He stressed that these measures must be implemented before the actual work on the Metro line and the elevated road is launched.
Details of the Ambitious Infrastructure Projects
The proposed infrastructure development is substantial. It includes an elevated six-lane road that will begin at Vimannagar chowk, extend towards Wagholi, and continue all the way to Shirur, covering a total distance of over 54 kilometers. Running parallel to this, the Metro line, which is currently sanctioned up to Wagholi, will pass over this elevated road.
Construction agencies have already been mobilized. The Maha Metro has initiated a tendering process to appoint an agency responsible for constructing the elevated stretch and the Metro line from Ramwadi to Wagholi. Meanwhile, the state-run MSIDC (Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation) will handle the construction of the remaining portion of the road from Wagholi to Shirur.
On-Ground Inspection and Directives
On Friday, MLA Katke conducted a thorough inspection of the entire proposed route. He was accompanied by officials from MahaMetro, the PMC, and the traffic police. During this inspection, he directed the officials to take immediate and necessary steps.
"The authorities must develop alternative road links and clear any obstacles from the existing roads to ensure the free flow of vehicles," Katke stated. He further insisted that a detailed, comprehensive transportation plan should be tabled and finalized at the earliest possible opportunity.
Project Significance and Commuter Concerns
The six-lane Pune-Shirur elevated road is recognized as an ambitious joint project for both the state government and the Central government. During a recent visit to Pune, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari indicated that work on this elevated road to Shirur may begin shortly, underscoring its priority status.
However, daily commuters on Nagar road have expressed their apprehensions. Residents, like Kharadi's Ashish Jadhav, acknowledge the positive step of officials inspecting the area beforehand but have clear expectations. "We expect a positive outcome. The authorities must ensure that the agencies executing the work leave at least part of the carriageways free for vehicles," Jadhav said, echoing the sentiment of many who rely on this route.
