Pune Municipal Corporation Unveils Plan for Dedicated Roadside Markets
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking a significant step to address the persistent issue of illegal hawkers by planning to establish dedicated roadside markets across the city. Modeled after Delhi's renowned Palika Bazaar, these markets will include essential amenities such as parking facilities, aiming to provide a structured and legal alternative for vendors currently occupying footpaths and roadsides.
Finalizing Locations and Implementation Strategy
PMC standing committee chief Shrinath Bhimale announced that eight locations are being finalized across civic areas for these markets. Bhimale, who represents the Market Yard area, highlighted that one such market is specifically planned for the Market Yard region. The initiative involves shifting vendors from unauthorized spaces to these designated spots, with a phased rollout planned for other parts of the city to ensure systematic implementation.
Residents Express Skepticism Over Effectiveness
Despite PMC's proactive approach, residents have voiced serious doubts about the plan's ability to effectively handle the illegal vendor problem. Anup Joshi from Satara Road pointed out that previous drives by PMC to restrict illegal vendors on footpaths have failed to yield lasting results, with the issue persisting over time.
Swapnil Mankar, a frequent traveler via FC Road, echoed these concerns, noting that footpaths in areas like FC Road and Deccan Gymkhana remain consistently occupied by illegal vendors, alongside some authorized ones. Mankar emphasized that earlier attempts to relocate vendors to designated areas were unsuccessful, calling for sustained and rigorous enforcement drives to achieve meaningful change.
PMC Commits to Continued Action Against Illegal Vendors
In response to these challenges, Bhimale assured that action against illegal vendors will continue unabated. He stated that the administration will be urged to intensify efforts against those illegally occupying footpaths, underscoring PMC's commitment to restoring order and accessibility in public spaces. This dual strategy of providing legal alternatives while enforcing regulations aims to create a balanced solution for Pune's urban landscape.
