Punjab Agriculture Department Takes Action Against Unauthorized Fertilizer Firm

In a significant enforcement action, the Punjab Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has initiated legal proceedings against a Haryana-based company for allegedly storing and selling unauthorized agricultural inputs. The firm, identified as M/s Unitech Crop Science, which operates a godown in Malerkotla, has been charged following a surprise inspection that uncovered illicit stock.

Surprise Inspection Leads to Seizure and FIR

Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian revealed that during an unannounced inspection, officials discovered a substantial quantity of unauthorized fertilizers and insecticides on the premises of the Jhajjar-based company. The minister emphasized that the stock was immediately seized to prevent its distribution to farmers, ensuring that no substandard products reach the agricultural community.

Legal actions have been taken under multiple statutes, including the Fertilizers (Control) Order, 1985, the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and the Insecticides Act, 1968. Additionally, an FIR has been registered under Section 318 (4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Amargarh police station in Malerkotla district, marking a firm stance against regulatory violations.

Government's Commitment to Farmer Welfare

Minister Khudian asserted that the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government is unwavering in its commitment to providing quality agricultural inputs to farmers across the state. "We will not tolerate any violation of statutory provisions related to fertilizers and insecticides," he stated. "Strict action will continue against any individual or firm found involved in the manufacture, storage, or sale of unauthorized agricultural products."

This crackdown is part of a broader initiative to safeguard farmers from potentially harmful or ineffective products that could compromise crop yields and soil health.

Intensified Inspections to Protect Agricultural Interests

Punjab Director of Agriculture Gurjit Singh Brar highlighted that the agriculture department has ramped up its inspection efforts to protect farmers' interests. The intensified surveillance aims to:

  • Identify and penalize entities dealing in unauthorized agricultural inputs.
  • Ensure compliance with established quality standards and regulations.
  • Prevent the sale of substandard products that could harm farming operations.

This proactive approach underscores the government's dedication to maintaining the integrity of the agricultural supply chain and supporting the state's farming community.
