Punjab Government Unveils Major Flood Protection Initiative for River Villages
In a significant move to safeguard vulnerable communities, Punjab's Education and Information & Public Relations Minister, Harjot Singh Bains, announced a comprehensive flood protection plan valued at Rs 52 crore on Friday. The initiative targets villages situated along the Satluj and Swan rivers within the Sri Anandpur Sahib constituency, aiming to provide permanent security against monsoon floods.
Government Commitment to Flood Prevention
Minister Bains emphasized that the Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is dedicated to protecting villages that have historically suffered from severe flooding. "The safety of our people is non-negotiable," he stated, referencing the harsh lessons learned from last year's floods. "We are building robust, long-term protections to prevent future disasters."
He highlighted that the administration has expedited major infrastructure projects in the region, with works worth Rs 52 crore already tendered and commenced. Physical construction is expected to accelerate within the next fortnight. Additionally, projects estimated at Rs 30 crore are in the pipeline, further expanding the flood defense network.
Detailed Village-Wise Protection Works
The flood protection plan includes specific allocations for various villages, ensuring tailored solutions:
- Dasgrain and Mahain: Will receive a Rs 1 crore revetment.
- Harsa Bela: After a Rs 4.5 crore flood protection project last year, this village will get an upgraded 2,200-foot revetment worth Rs 9 crore.
- Mehndli Kalan: A new 1,800-foot revetment costing over Rs 8.75 crore.
- Agampur: A 3,200-foot revetment valued at Rs 12 crore to protect the village and bridge approaches.
- Burj: A 700-foot revetment worth Rs 7 crore.
- Ajauli: A 700-foot revetment costing Rs 3.5 crore.
- Lodhipur: A 2,000-foot revetment valued at Rs 9 crore.
In addition to these major sites, flood protection works are underway or approved for other villages including Bhalan, Triveni Mandir, and Nangran. The overall projects involve constructing revetments spanning over 11,000 feet, with significant groundwork already completed.
Monitoring and Future Expansion
Minister Bains reassured residents ahead of the monsoon season by committing to personal oversight of the projects. "I am personally monitoring the progress and am determined to ensure foolproof flood protection works before the commencement of this monsoon," he said. The government plans to expand these initiatives based on local demands, demonstrating a proactive approach to disaster management.
This comprehensive plan reflects Punjab's strategic efforts to mitigate flood risks, enhance community resilience, and protect agricultural and residential areas from seasonal threats. By investing in durable infrastructure, the state aims to reduce economic losses and improve safety for thousands of residents in flood-prone regions.
