In a significant move to bolster information access and community engagement in sensitive border regions, the first-ever community radio station along the Line of Control (LoC) has been officially launched in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district.
A Strategic Initiative for Border Communities
Named "Radio Sangam," the station is a collaborative effort between the Indian Army, the civil administration, and local residents. It has been established in Keri village, situated remarkably close—nearly one kilometre—from the volatile Line of Control. Officials highlighted that this pioneering initiative is designed to serve a dual purpose: providing a credible platform for authentic local news and acting as a bulwark against misinformation and propaganda originating from across the border.
Amplifying Local Voices, Countering False Narratives
The station was formally inaugurated by Rajouri Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma at a ceremony attended by civil society members, administration officials, and local residents. Addressing the gathering, Sharma outlined the multifaceted role of Radio Sangam. He stated that the station will promote social awareness, encourage public participation, and amplify local voices, thereby strengthening the crucial connection between the administration and the border communities.
Given its strategic location, the broadcasts of Radio Sangam hold unique potential. Officials noted that its signal can also be received in areas across the LoC, extending its reach and impact. This feature is seen as vital for countering cross-border propaganda by offering an alternative, reliable source of information directly from the Indian side.
