Indian Railways Aims to Renew 7,900 km of Tracks in FY27 for Enhanced Safety and Speed
Railways Targets 7,900 km Track Renewal in FY27 for Safety

Indian Railways has set an ambitious target for the upcoming fiscal year. The national transporter aims to renew tracks covering 7,900 track kilometers in FY 2026-27. This move directly supports plans to operate faster trains across the extensive railway network.

Sustained Progress in Track Infrastructure

The Ministry of Railways reports substantial progress in strengthening track infrastructure. Sustained investment and focused execution over recent years have driven this advancement. In the fiscal year 2024-25, the railways successfully renewed tracks over 6,851 track kilometers.

Work continues at a brisk pace in the current financial year. More than 7,500 track kilometers of renewal work is currently underway for 2025-26. This consistent effort highlights the railways' commitment to upgrading its core infrastructure.

Critical Turnout Renewal Achievements

The ministry emphasizes significant achievements in turnout renewal. This component is critical for ensuring smooth train operations. During 2024-25, the railways provided 7,161 Thick Web Switches and 1,704 Weldable CMS Crossings.

The current year sees even greater activity. Over 8,000 Thick Web Switches and more than 3,000 Weldable CMS Crossings are being installed in 2025-26. These upgrades directly contribute to operational reliability.

Mechanized Deep Screening for Track Stability

Mechanized deep screening of ballast remains a consistent practice. This process is essential for maintaining track stability and improving ride quality. In 2024-25, the railways completed deep screening across 7,442 track kilometers.

Work continues extensively in the current fiscal year. Over 7,500 track kilometers of deep screening is being undertaken during 2025-26. This maintenance activity ensures long-term track integrity.

Safety Enhancements Through Fencing

The national transporter has prioritized fencing along railway tracks. This initiative aims to minimize cattle run-over incidents and prevent trespassing. Approximately 15,000 kilometers of fencing have been provided so far.

This fencing has already improved safety on specific sections. Trains operating at speeds exceeding 110 kmph benefit from these enhanced safety measures. The reduction in external intrusions creates a safer operating environment.

Systematic Approach to Track Renewal

Track renewal works follow a systematic process. Renewal occurs when a stretch of track becomes due based on established criteria. The Indian Railway Permanent Way Manual provides guidelines based on age and condition.

If renewal faces delays due to various reasons, the railways implements appropriate safeguards. Suitable speed restrictions are imposed when necessary. These restrictions ensure the safe running of trains until renewal can be completed.

The renewal process involves replacing existing rails or sleepers. This replacement can occur separately or together using new or second-hand serviceable material. The approach balances efficiency with resource utilization.

Indian Railways continues to build on its infrastructure momentum. The FY27 target of 7,900 track kilometers represents another step forward. Enhanced tracks will support both safety improvements and the ambition for faster train services across India.
