In a significant development for urban infrastructure, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has announced that the much-anticipated Sandhiya Bridge is nearing completion, with approximately 90% of the construction work already finished. This four-lane railway overbridge, which replaces an outdated two-lane structure, is poised to transform daily commutes for thousands traveling on Jamnagar Road.

Strategic Timeline and Engineering Milestones

RMC officials have revealed that the inauguration is strategically planned to occur before the announcement of civic election dates and the subsequent enforcement of the model code of conduct. The project, constructed at a substantial cost of Rs 74.32 crore, represents a critical investment in the city's transportation network.

A major engineering achievement was accomplished on Wednesday night, when seven steel girders were successfully installed over the railway tracks to form the central span of the bridge. According to an official RMC statement, cross-girder bracing operations will continue over the next two days during designated railway block periods, with comprehensive safety protocols implemented in close coordination with railway authorities.

Structural Specifications and Remaining Work

The new flyover boasts impressive dimensions, stretching 602 meters in length and 16.4 meters in width. Its design includes 21 spans, with the central span measuring 36 meters. The RMC has incorporated several thoughtful features, including 7.5-meter-wide service roads on both sides complete with footpaths, and two reinforced cement concrete (RCC) box culverts specifically for stormwater drainage.

Most of the major structural components have been completed, including all 40 piers, footings, and the majority of slab and girder installations. The remaining tasks primarily involve finishing the service roads, completing the final 30 meters of the RCC wall, and finalizing the approach roads.

Addressing Traffic Woes and Historical Context

Once operational, the Sandhiya Bridge is expected to eliminate persistent traffic jams on Jamnagar Road and eliminate delays at the railway crossing, resulting in substantial time and fuel savings for daily commuters. The old bridge, originally constructed in 1978, had become increasingly unsafe over time.

Following the tragic Morbi bridge collapse in 2022, the aging structure was first restricted to heavy vehicles, then completely closed to all traffic in May 2024 when dismantling operations commenced. The RMC estimates that approximately 1.5 lakh commuters will benefit directly from the new infrastructure.

Broader Transportation Impact

The bridge's completion will have far-reaching effects on regional transportation. Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) buses traveling from Jamnagar, Dwarka, Morbi, and Kutch previously used this route but have been forced to take the longer Ring Road alternative since 2022.

Additionally, heavy vehicles will regain access to this crucial corridor. Currently, these vehicles navigate through a narrow diversion in the Bhomeshwar area, creating extensive traffic bottlenecks during peak hours. The new bridge's opening promises to streamline freight movement and reduce congestion throughout the region.

RMC officials emphasize that this project represents more than just infrastructure development—it's a vital component of Rajkot's continued growth and modernization, addressing both immediate transportation challenges and long-term urban planning needs.
