Ranchi Railway Station's South Side Redevelopment Nears Completion, Set for July Launch
Ranchi: The ambitious redevelopment project on the south side of Ranchi railway station is progressing swiftly and is expected to be fully completed within the next three months, with operations slated to commence by July, according to official statements. This significant infrastructure initiative, which had previously missed its March deadline, is now on track to transform the station into a modern transportation hub.
Project Overview and Timeline
The foundation stone for this Rs 447-crore redevelopment project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Deoghar in July 2022. Despite the initial delay, railway authorities are confident that the remaining work will be wrapped up promptly. Divisional Railway Manager Karuna Nidhi Singh provided insights into the current status, noting, "The redeveloped station will offer world-class facilities to passengers. Some floor tiles are pending, and a shed is being constructed to complete the flooring before the monsoon season arrives."
World-Class Facilities and Design
Upon completion, the station will feature two three-storey buildings on its north and south sides, which will be seamlessly connected by an overbridge to facilitate smooth passenger movement. The new building is designed with separate entry and exit gates for enhanced convenience, along with a spacious 14,000 square meter parking area to accommodate vehicles efficiently.
Passengers can look forward to a range of premium amenities, including food courts, restaurants, and well-equipped lounge areas for comfort during travel. The station will also boast 10 new lifts and 17 escalators, specifically installed to ease the movement of divyang (differently-abled) passengers, ensuring accessibility for all.
Additional Features and Selection Process
Further enhancing the passenger experience, the redevelopment includes a mechanised parcel handling system for efficient luggage management and an elevated concourse that will house cafeterias, restaurants, rest rooms, and other essential amenities. This comprehensive upgrade is part of a broader initiative, as the railway station was selected from among 22 stations across the country by the Railway Board in 2017 for conversion into world-class stations, highlighting its strategic importance.
Future Phases and Broader Impact
Once the work on the south side concludes, attention will shift to the north side, where similar redevelopment efforts are planned to commence. This phased approach ensures minimal disruption to ongoing operations while progressively enhancing the station's infrastructure. The project is poised to significantly boost passenger convenience, support regional connectivity, and contribute to Ranchi's urban development, aligning with national goals for modernizing railway networks across India.
